Christine Woods wasn't chasing quick fame while studying musical theater at the University of Arizona. Her classical training gave her a technical foundation that many actors of her generation envied at Los Angeles casting calls. But the industry had other plans for her.
In 2009, Woods landed the role of Janis Hawk in the ambitious series FlashForward. ABC was looking for the successor to Lost and put its full financial muscle behind this science fiction project. She played an FBI agent with a personal secret that connected with audiences immediately.
But television is a fickle beast.
Despite the initial buzz, the series was canceled after just one season. Woods found herself back at square one, though with a name now on the radar of casting directors. She didn't dwell on losing her first major contract.
In 2014, her career took an unexpected turn when she joined the world of The Walking Dead. She played Dawn Lerner during the fifth season of the AMC series. Her character was a police officer trying to keep order in an Atlanta hospital under draconian rules.
It was time to switch things up.
Fans reacted with raw, aggressive hostility toward her character. Woods handled that hostility with cool professionalism (she knew that if people hated her, it meant her work was working). Beth Greene's death at the hands of her character sparked one of the biggest controversies in the show's history.
And that is precisely Woods's value on screen. She doesn't seek to please the audience or smooth out the rough edges of her characters. In 2015, she appeared in the series The Catch, showing she could move between post-apocalyptic drama and con-artist thriller with total ease.
Many critics discovered her best side thanks to Stephen Merchant on the HBO series Hello Ladies in 2013. She played Jessica James, a frustrated actress who rented a room to the lead character. The comedic chemistry between the two was dry and built on everyday pathos.
Woods' comedy doesn't rely on easy jokes. It builds on the rhythm and awkward pauses she commands to perfection. The series lasted only eight episodes plus a closing special, but it showed the industry that she could carry the weight of an adult narrative.
Media noise does not always guarantee staying power.
In 2017, she appeared in the film I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore, which won at the Sundance Film Festival. Her role as Meredith was small but essential to the film's dark comedy tone. Woods prefers projects where the script carries more weight than the marketing budget.
In 2022, she played Mary in the miniseries The Patient alongside Steve Carell. Her work on this FX production focused on complete emotional restraint. In 2023, she joined the cast of the second season of The Afterparty on Apple TV+. Filming of her scenes wrapped in August under the direction of Christopher Miller.
