Colleen Rennison was born in Vancouver in 1987 and, before turning ten, already knew what a professional film set was like. Her debut was anything but low-key: in 1994 she appeared in the independent film Max, and shortly after landed a role in Carpool. The camera soon picked up a gaze that didn't fit the docile child image the industry was looking for at the time.
In 1999 she shot The Story of Us under the direction of Rob Reiner. Sharing scenes with Bruce Willis and Michelle Pfeiffer could have been the start of a straightforward Hollywood career, but Rennison always seemed more at home on the margins of Canadian film production.
And then film stopped being her only priority.
During her teens and early twenties, she racked up appearances in genre series such as Stargate SG-1 and The Outer Limits. They were paycheck jobs that kept her name in casting directors' files while she searched for another way to express herself. Music began to gain ground over the script, and her raspy voice, often compared to Janis Joplin's, eventually won out over rehearsed dialogue.
In 2012, she founded the blues-rock band No Sinner. The group's name was a play on words built from her last name spelled backward, and it served as a statement of intent for her new creative chapter. They released the EP Boo Hoo Hoo in 2014, and international music critics took notice of this woman who seemed to have lived three lives before turning thirty.
Acting took a deliberate back seat.
But films came calling again in 2013 with Down River. In this production she played a young woman struggling with the chaos of her own life, a role that earned her a nomination at the Leo Awards. Rennison shot her scenes raw with barely any makeup, pursuing a truth that Canadian mainstream cinema tended to avoid at the time.
That film worked as a mirror of her own life in Vancouver.
In 2016, the band released the album Old Habits Die Hard. It was recorded with an intensity that nearly broke up the original lineup and forced Rennison to rethink her relationship with the entertainment industry. Tours of Europe and the United States pulled her away from conventional film sets for well over five years.
After years of silence in the studio and sporadic TV appearances, she decided to resume her solo career. In 2023 she released the album See the Sky About to Rain, recorded in Nashville studios, which moved away from aggressive rock toward sounds closer to country and classic soul.
There were no major marketing campaigns.
Several veteran session musicians contributed to this album, helping shape a dry, direct sound. Still, film has not disappeared from her life, as Rennison continues to take part in independent projects in British Columbia. Her profile steers clear of the red carpet to focus on pure creation, whether in front of a microphone or under the lights of a set.
In 2024, she remains based in Vancouver and independently manages her publishing rights. The distribution deal for her latest album was signed with the Canadian label Black Hen Music.
