Cush Jumbo was born in south London during the summer of 1985. She grew up in a large family where noise was the norm and silence was a luxury she found only in dance classes. At age fourteen, she decided that acting mattered more to her than dancing.
She entered the Central School of Speech and Drama on a scholarship. It was there that she polished the stage presence that, years later, would win over casting directors in the United States. But her path didn't begin at the big television studios.
In 2015, international audiences discovered her thanks to Lucca Quinn in the seventh season of The Good Wife. The writers needed someone who could hold their own against Julianna Margulies without blinking.
Jumbo didn't just hold her own.
She made her character the true driving force behind the later creation of The Good Fight in 2017. Over four seasons, she navigated the cynicism of the American legal system with an elegance that recalled classical theater more than procedural television. For her, the script has always been a score to be performed with surgical precision.
In 2021, she decided it was time to take on Hamlet at the Young Vic in London. She played the Prince of Denmark without gender conventions and with a rawness that British critics called revelatory. The production had to be postponed several times due to global health restrictions.
Tickets sold out in a matter of hours.
Her relationship with Shakespeare reached a new level in 2023 when she starred in Macbeth opposite David Tennant at the Donmar Warehouse. The production used binaural sound technology so that audiences heard the actors' whispers directly in their ears. This technical bet forced Jumbo to measure every breath so she wouldn't overload the highly sensitive microphones.
She took on the challenge without complaint. As a result, her reputation on the London stage was secured before she turned forty.
In 2024, she premiered Criminal Record on Apple TV+. In this crime drama, she plays Sergeant June Lenker and shares the screen with Peter Capaldi in a dry, suffocating acting duel. The story explores institutional racism and the past failures of the Metropolitan Police.
But what matters most about this project is her technical involvement behind the camera.
Jumbo served as executive producer to ensure the series kept the gritty realism of the streets of London. She also oversaw part of the casting process to make sure the city's diversity was reflected naturally in the supporting characters.
In 2019, she received the Order of the British Empire for her services to acting. Filming for the second season of Criminal Record was scheduled to begin in London in the winter of 2024 on a budget shaped by the UK's new tax policies.
