Elaine Hendrix didn't arrive in Hollywood intending to become the most hated villain of the 1990s. In 1992, she left Tennessee with a suitcase and the training needed to work as a professional dancer. But fame in show business tends to be more capricious than a B-movie script.
Her first paychecks came from working on music videos for artists like Public Enemy and Keith Richards. That period of spotlights and choreography gave her enough stage experience to realize her face worked better in front of a film camera than on a stage. So she decided to change course.
In 1997, she appeared in Romy and Michele's High School Reunion.
That supporting role was enough for casting directors to note her name on the list of actresses capable of handling acid comedy. A year later came the project that defined her public image over the following two decades.
Disney was looking for a woman who could be hated by millions of kids around the world. In 1998, Parent Trap hit theaters, and Hendrix took on the role of the scheming young fiancée. She was 26 years old when she played a character her own age, though popular memory will always remember her as much older because of her icy presence on screen.
That movie grossed more than 92 million dollars in the United States alone. The success was so massive that Hendrix became recognized on every street in Los Angeles. But being typecast in roles as a icy, calculating blonde began to pose a real threat to her career.
And she decided to play her own cards.
Instead of repeating the same formula in big-budget romantic comedies, she turned to television and independent film. In 2003, she shot Inspector Gadget 2, assuming that family entertainment was a niche where her name still carried safe value for producers.
Over time, television offered her characters with far more edge than the commercial films of the late century. Between 2015 and 2016, she was part of the cast of Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll alongside Denis Leary. There, she played Ava, a role that allowed her to move away from the polish of her early career and embrace a much dirtier, electric tone.
In 2019, she took the risk of replacing Nicollette Sheridan in the reboot of the series Dynasty. Playing Alexis Carrington meant stepping into territory where comparisons with the past were constant. Hendrix stayed with the project until 2022, winning over audiences to accept her version of the character without excessive nostalgia.
Elaine Hendrix lives in Los Angeles.
Off set, she devotes most of her time to the organization The Pet Matchmaker. In 2024, she personally oversees the rescue protocols for abandoned animals in California and manages the logistics of their care. She does not use assistants for the cleaning tasks at the shelters she coordinates.
