Elisha Cuthbert was born in Calgary and was already working as a children's clothing model before turning ten. She was a precocious girl in the Canadian industry who soon found a place on national television. Her first major paycheck came from Popular Mechanics for Kids, an educational show in which she traveled the world explaining how machines work.
Hillary Clinton once invited her to the White House after seeing one of her technology reports. That was the trigger that led her family to try their luck in Los Angeles.
In 2001, she landed in California to shoot the pilot of a real-time action series. It was called 24. She played Kim Bauer, the daughter of agent Jack Bauer, and that role kept her trapped in kidnapping plots and escapes for several seasons. Audiences either loved or hated her, but nobody could ignore her presence on screen.
She was a star before she finished high school.
Hollywood quickly tried to typecast her as the explosive, approachable blonde. In 2004, she starred in The Girl Next Door alongside Emile Hirsch. It was a risky bet because it mixed teen comedy with the adult film world. The movie grossed $30 million and put her on the covers of magazines across the era.
But box office success doesn't always guarantee longevity at major studios. After appearing in the remake of House of Wax in 2005, where she shared the bill with Paris Hilton, her career in horror films entered a phase of smaller projects.
Cuthbert found her real place far from the screaming and the car chases. In 2011, she joined the cast of Happy Endings, a sitcom now considered a cult classic. There, she played Alex Kerkovich and broke away from her image as the perfect girl through absurd, physical comedy.
The industry often overlooks talent for comedy.
The gamble paid off for three seasons until ABC decided to cancel the show due to its low ratings. Despite the setback, the actress had already shown that her comedic timing was better than that of many of her contemporaries. In 2016, she moved to Netflix to join The Ranch alongside Ashton Kutcher.
Over 44 episodes, she played Abby Phillips. It was a mature performance in which she recovered a naturalistic tone, far from the spotlight of the red carpets of the early 2000s. In 2022, she returned to the suspense genre with the Irish film The Cellar, playing a mother facing a supernatural disappearance in a country house.
In 2022, she also joined the cast of Bandit alongside Mel Gibson and Josh Duhamel. Filming was completed in just three weeks of intensive shooting at various locations in Georgia. The movie earned a 73% approval rating on specialized critic sites after its limited release.
Cuthbert lives mainly in Canada with her husband, former hockey player Dion Phaneuf. Her salary per episode in the final seasons of 24 was around $100,000.
