From Montreal Stages to Deep Space

Cas Anvar was born in Regina and raised in Montreal in a family of Iranian origin. His academic training at the National Theatre School of Canada gave him a technical foundation that few actors of his generation handle with such ease. He started out grinding through classical theater and founded his own company to stage Shakespeare in public parks. But commercial film soon came knocking.

In 2003 he took part in Shattered Glass and found that the camera demanded a different kind of restraint than the stage. That experience helped him understand that his profile fit suspense and political drama productions. And the bet paid off.

For years he racked up supporting roles in television series and mid-budget films. In 2011, he voiced Altaïr in the video game Assassin's Creed: Revelations. It was a purely vocal job that brought him unexpected fame among young audiences. But his face remained that of a reliable supporting actor until the project that changed everything came along.

And then came space.

Alex Kamal's role in The Expanse put him on the international radar in 2015. He played a Martian pilot with a strong Texan accent who flew the Rocinante. **The series became a cult favorite** after Amazon rescued it following its cancellation on the Syfy network. Anvar had to learn to act in simulated zero-gravity environments and in tiny soundstage cockpits.

The Weight of the Major Studios

Not everything in his career has been pure science fiction. In 2012, he worked under Ben Affleck on Argo. The film won the Oscar for Best Picture, and Anvar was part of the tense engine of the plot. A year later he took part in Diana alongside Naomi Watts. But the actor has always preferred projects where the script carries more weight than the red carpet glamour.

In 2019, he shot The Operative on locations in Israel and Bulgaria. It was a complex production about the world of espionage in which he shared the bill with Diane Kruger. The shoot demanded considerable physical effort because of the harsh terrain.

Television has been his most consistent home.

In 2019 he joined the cast of How to Get Away with Murder to play Robert Hsieh. It was a character that moved away from the stereotypes often assigned to actors of his background. Because Anvar has always fought to avoid the terrorist or flat villain roles that Hollywood routinely offers.

2020's Dry Cut

The year 2020 marked a complete halt in his career. An internal investigation after several complaints of inappropriate sexual conduct ended with his exit from The Expanse. The show's producers decided that his character would die of a stroke at the end of season five. That firing was abrupt and kept him out of the spotlight for a considerable time.

But the work never stopped entirely.

In 2023 he took part in the final season of Mayans M.C., playing Isaac. It was a brief role but full of the aggression the FX series needed for its finale. He has also stayed involved in voice work on animated projects that don't require a physical presence at studios in Los Angeles.

In 2021, he wrapped filming on The Boathouse under the direction of Hannah Cheesman. The film's budget was only one million Canadian dollars.
