Emily Perkins was never the typical child star from cereal commercials. In 1990, she played the young Beverly Marsh in the television adaptation of It, and that role defined her relationship with the horror genre. She was thirteen but projected an unsettling maturity that carried off the screen.
And audiences connected with that vulnerability.
That shoot in Vancouver put her on the radar of casting directors looking for faces that broke away from the Californian beauty standard. But rather than cash in on her image on a massive scale, she chose to draw on her training at the University of British Columbia, where she studied psychology and fine arts. That decision shaped how she approaches scripts, from a far more analytical and less emotional perspective.
Before she turned twenty, she had already appeared in productions such as Small Sacrifices and Moment of Truth: Broken Pledges. In 1998, she appeared on The X-Files, playing Dara Kernoff in an episode that boosted her status in Canadian science fiction. Her face was associated with complex (sometimes broken) characters who concealed an inner strength that was hard to pin down.
In 2000, Canadian horror cinema changed course with Ginger Snaps. Perkins took on the role of Brigitte Fitzgerald, a teenager obsessed with death who has to cope with her sister's transformation into a werewolf. The film worked as a raw metaphor for female puberty and social alienation.
The film earned just half a million dollars during its limited U.S. release.
But the DVD market rescued her from obscurity. The impact was so strong that in 2004 she filmed the sequel Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed and the prequel Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning back to back. In these installments, Perkins carried the weight of the narrative and pushed the physical limits of acting under layers of makeup and heavy prosthetics.
It was a risky bet that paid off.
Because Brigitte Fitzgerald was no ordinary heroine. She was a cynical, brilliant young woman who preferred darkness to social acceptance. In 2001, she received the Best Actress award at the Málaga Fantastic Film Week for this role. That recognition in Spain confirmed that her talent crossed borders, even though she usually worked on independent circuits.
In 2009, she joined the world of Supernatural to bring Becky Rosen to life. What started as a parody of the show's most devoted fans ended up as a recurring character who appeared in several episodes until 2019. Perkins played the comedy dryly and precisely, avoiding the easy caricature that the original script proposed.
Between 2010 and 2011, she took part in the comedy Hiccups, playing Crystal Braywood across twenty-six episodes. It was a different kind of role that let her step away from dark alleys and monsters to test her comedic timing on Canadian national television. Her career stayed steady thanks to a mix of supporting film roles and a constant presence on the small screen.
In 2014, she filmed Extraterrestrial, directed by Colin Minihan. It was one of her last notable genre film roles before she prioritized her personal life in Vancouver. During those years, she also took part in productions such as Da Vinci's Inquest, where she played Carmen in a thirty-episode arc between 2001 and 2005.
Emily Perkins currently keeps a low profile away from the Hollywood spotlight and prefers local production in British Columbia. In 2005, she won the Leo Award for Best Performance by a Female in a Dramatic Series for her work on Da Vinci's Inquest.
