Emjay Anthony Salazar was born in Florida and, before turning six, already knew what an advertising contract was. He didn't need decades in acting schools to understand how a film set works. He was five when his face began appearing in national ads across the United States.
In 2009, he made his movie debut in It's Complicated. That shoot put him opposite Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin. Anthony played the youngest son of the family with a naturalness that avoided the habits of Los Angeles child actors.
He had no prior drama school training.
But his true turning point came in 2014 with the release of Chef. Jon Favreau was looking for a kid who didn't seem like a method actor but someone who could peel onions realistically. **Favreau gave him a real kitchen knife**, and the kid responded with a chemistry that carried the film's emotional weight.
And the bet paid off because audiences believed that this kid was genuinely learning a trade inside a food truck. That production forced him to shoot in extreme heat and cramped spaces. It was his first lesson in the physical logistics of independent film.
In 2015, he made his move into genre films with Krampus. Director Michael Dougherty wanted a restrained performance for a holiday horror story. Anthony handled the physical fear without slipping into the hysterical screaming typical of actors his age.
The industry stopped seeing him as a kid and started treating him like a crew member.
That same year, he appeared in The Divergent Series: Insurgent. It was a different experience, focused on coordinating with stunt performers. Because in major Hollywood franchises, **the actor is just one more piece** of a complex visual machine.
In 2016, he voiced Grey the wolf in The Jungle Book. He worked in empty sound booths, imagining a jungle that existed only on Disney's servers. That taught him that acting sometimes means talking to a white wall for eight hours a day.
But he didn't abandon light comedy. Between 2016 and 2017, he shot Bad Moms and its sequel alongside Mila Kunis. These productions let him keep a foot in big-studio commercial cinema while his physical appearance began to change.
In 2018, he shot Replicas alongside Keanu Reeves in Puerto Rico. The film suffered technical delays and harsh reviews after its release. But Anthony saved his scenes with a composure that stood out against the chaos of the sci-fi production.
And that's how he made his way to prestige television.
For 2020, he took part in the series Tales from the Loop for Amazon Prime Video. The show's aesthetic called for a slow, melancholic tone. In 2022 and 2023, he played Cooper in the Apple TV+ series Physical. Sharing scenes with Rose Byrne pushed him to shift his register toward much sharper comedy.
In 2023, he wrapped his role in the third season of this series after filming on location in Los Angeles under a strict union production protocol. His distribution contract called for a six-week promotional schedule in North America.
