Glenn Taranto has one of those faces viewers recognize long before they remember the name. His square jaw and that gaze that shifts between comedy and menace opened the doors of Los Angeles studios for him in the late eighties. But his real trial by fire didn't come until 1998.
That year he accepted the role of Gomez Addams in The New Addams Family. Raul Julia's shadow was long, and audiences were not forgiving of unfair comparisons. Taranto decided to ignore the earlier criticism and focused on the character's physicality across sixty-five episodes.
It was no easy task.
And the bet paid off, because the actor understood that the humor of television's most macabre family lay in the utter seriousness with which they lived their madness. He earned the respect of the most devoted fans. During that shoot in Vancouver, he learned that Canadian television demanded production paces that Hollywood was only beginning to digest.
Many actors of his generation look down on voice work or motion capture. Taranto did the opposite. In 2010 he lent his voice and face to the character Leo Galante in the video game Mafia II. His performance as a mob counselor with twisted ethical principles gave him a second professional life in an industry that earns more money than conventional cinema.
He reprised the role in 2016 with Mafia III and built a loyal fan base among people who had never seen his television work. He's an actor who treats the microphone as an extension of the stage. That's why his contributions to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim went unnoticed by the general public but are pure gold for sound design specialists.
That's how quiet prestige is built.
But his career isn't limited to lending his voice in dark recording booths. In 2005 he appeared in The Devil’s Rejects under the direction of Rob Zombie. It was a brief but sharp appearance. Taranto prefers those supporting roles where he can step in, steal the scene and leave before the audience grows tired of his presence.
In 1999, he decided acting wasn't enough and wrote the script for Stolen Moments. The film won the audience award at the Sarasota Film Festival and gave him a view of the business from the other side of the camera. He began alternating appearances in series such as Days of Our Lives with developing original stories that rarely made it to production due to a lack of independent funding.
His stint on General Hospital in 2020 as Captain Higgins proved that daytime soaps are the best gym for staying sharp. On that set, scenes are shot almost in one take. Zero margin for error for a professional who has spent four decades memorizing marks on the floor.
In 2024, he worked on the production of The Oldest Profession, directed by Abigail Prade. It's a project that steps away from explosions and horror makeup to focus on dense dialogue. Taranto still lives in Los Angeles and has held his Screen Actors Guild card since 1980.
Filming wrapped after twenty-two days of effective work on location.
