Haley Bennett didn't arrive in Hollywood with a backup plan. In 2007, she auditioned for Music and Lyrics without ever having set foot on a professional set. She won the role of Cora Corman over hundreds of candidates with far more experience. That parody of a pop star required her to sing and dance in stadiums in front of Hugh Grant.
Success was immediate but deceptive.
Over the following years, she kept taking on projects that never quite broke out at the box office. She appeared in The Hole in 2009 and in Kaboom a year later. These were supporting parts in genre films where her presence was often overshadowed by the production design or the script. But she kept living in Los Angeles, waiting for a call that would change the pace of her career.
In 2014, Antoine Fuqua cast her in The Equalizer. It was the first time she shared the screen with Denzel Washington, and the working relationship went so well that they reunited in 2016. That same year, they filmed the remake of The Magnificent Seven, in which she played a widow seeking revenge.
2016 was the moment her face appeared on bus shelters all over the world. She starred in The Girl on the Train as Megan Hipwell, and the press began obsessively comparing her to other actresses of her generation. She didn't seem to mind much, as long as interesting scripts kept landing on her desk.
And she decided to risk her own money.
In 2019, she produced and starred in Swallow. It's a raw, suffocating film about a woman who swallows dangerous objects to regain control of her life. She won the Best Actress award at the Tribeca Film Festival for this role. It was the definitive proof that she could carry the narrative weight of an independent film without the backing of major studios.
Because Bennett didn't want to be just a pretty face in action thrillers. In 2020 she took part in Hillbilly Elegy for Netflix and shortly after in The Devil All the Time. In both projects she sought broken characters who moved away from the glamorous image of her early work in romantic comedies.
Her personal and professional relationship with director Joe Wright opened a new creative chapter in her career. In 2021, she starred in the musical adaptation of Cyrano alongside Peter Dinklage. She played Roxanne with a fragility that European critics unanimously applauded after its run at the winter festivals.
The industry began to see her as a reliable period-drama actress.
During 2023 she stepped into the shoes of Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin for the film Widow Clicquot. It is a historical drama about the creation of the French champagne empire in the 19th century. The production was shot in real vineyards in France with a small crew to keep the scenes intimate.
In 2024, she appeared in the big-budget production Borderlands under the direction of Eli Roth. For 2025, she has the release of The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde, directed by M. Night Shyamalan, on the calendar. Filming for the latter wrapped in Bristol in August 2024.
