Everyone ends up in the same damn place.

During World War II, in the Solomon Islands, Marine Willard Russell and his patrol find Sergeant Miller Jones, an artillery sergeant, flayed and crucified by Japanese soldiers. As the men examine his dog tag, Jones regains consciousness. That scene opens the film directed by Antonio Campos, in which Bill Skarsgård plays Willard. The story then moves to Knockemstiff, a town in Ohio where young Arvin Russell lives. From the first minutes, the story places the viewer in a rural setting where the characters bear the consequences of the postwar era and where certain decisions begin to weigh on all of them.

Sebastian Stan joined the cast to replace Chris Evans, who left the project due to scheduling conflicts and personally recommended Stan for the role.
The author of the original novel, Donald Ray Pollock, also narrates the film, which draws on his descriptions.
The film's visual style draws inspiration from painter Andrew Wyeth and photographer William Eggleston, the latter for his striking use of color.
