The Legacy of Discipline

Mia Wasikowska stopped dancing ballet at fourteen because the pressure for physical perfection became unbearable. That military-style discipline evolved into a restrained acting style that has defined her since her first roles in Australia. In 2004, she debuted in the series All Saints, and from that moment it was clear her gaze conveyed more than her words.

In 2008, she broke into American television with the series In Treatment. Her role as a gymnast with suicidal tendencies caught the attention of a Tim Burton who was looking for a fresh face. The director chose her to star in Alice in Wonderland in 2010, which marked her definitive entry into the global industry. The film grossed more than one billion dollars worldwide.

But the noise of the major studios never quite fit her personality.

Despite having the world at her feet after her Disney success, she chose projects with a much darker psychological edge. In 2011, she shot Jane Eyre under the direction of Cary Fukunaga. Her portrayal of Charlotte Brontë's heroine stood out for an unusual restraint that avoided the melodramatic excess common to the genre. Wasikowska has always preferred silence to screaming.

Refuge in Art-House Cinema

The actress decided to step away from the spotlight in Los Angeles and return to Sydney. From there, she built a schedule that connected her with key names in contemporary cinema. In 2013, she worked with Park Chan-wook on Stoker and with Jim Jarmusch on Only Lovers Left Alive. In both films, she channeled an almost ghostly paleness that became her signature technical trademark during that period.

She turned down million-dollar contracts to prioritize independent shoots in extreme weather conditions. For the film Tracks in 2013, she walked across the Australian desert for months, accompanied by camels. International critics highlighted her ability to carry a story with barely any dialogue.

It was a conscious decision.

Because the industry constantly tried to pigeonhole her into period roles. She responded by taking part in David Cronenberg's Maps to the Stars in 2014, where she played a young woman with physical and emotional scars. As a result, her career moved away from the predictability that often comes with young stars chasing quick awards.

Behind the Camera and New Horizons

In 2013, she made the leap to directing with the anthology film The Turning. That experience behind the camera changed the way she approached scripts. In 2015, she worked with Guillermo del Toro again on Crimson Peak, showing she could navigate big-budget cinema as long as there was a strong artistic vision behind it. Still, her interest in producing her own projects kept growing.

And the gamble paid off.

In the years that followed, she spaced out her appearances to be more selective about directors. In 2018, she starred in Piercing, and in 2019, she worked on Bergman Island by Mia Hansen-Løve. Filming on the island of Fårö strengthened her ties to intellectual European cinema. In 2021, she appeared in the film Blueback, which focuses on ocean conservation in her native Australia.

In 2023, she premiered Club Zero, directed by Jessica Hausner, at the Cannes Film Festival. In this production, she plays a nutrition teacher who manipulates her students through extreme fasting. The film was shot mainly on location in Oxford and Austria, with an estimated budget of eight million euros.
