Hera Hilmar grew up watching her father, Hilmar Oddsson, plan camera shots and her mother, Þórey Sigþórsdóttir, memorize dialogue. In 1995, she got her first professional break in the film Tár úr steini. That shoot was an early lesson in downtime and the discipline demanded by Icelandic cinema.
The decision to move to London was purely strategic. She enrolled at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art to step away from the comfort of her surroundings. There she realized her accent was a tool she had to shape if she wanted to work in British productions. In Reykjavík, the market is small, and she was looking for a different kind of exposure.
And the plan worked.
In 2013, she landed a role in the cast of Da Vinci's Demons. She played Vanessa over three seasons in a David S. Goyer production that blended history and fantasy. It was her first experience with long shoots and exclusivity contracts. But television was just a stepping stone to the big screen.
In 2018, Peter Jackson set her sights on her to lead Mortal Engines. The film had a budget of 100 million dollars and aimed to become a generational franchise. She took on the role of Hester Shaw (a heroine with a scar across her face), which broke with Hollywood's usual aesthetic standards.
The box office was a hard blow for everyone involved. The film grossed just 83 million dollars worldwide and caused millions in losses for Universal Pictures. So plans to continue Philip Reeve's story were canceled immediately. But the commercial failure did not slow her pace of work on other platforms.
The major studio market doesn't forgive miscalculations.
She soon joined the series See, produced by Apple TV+. For three seasons, she played Maghra alongside Jason Momoa in a world where humanity has lost its sight. Filming in the Canadian forests demanded more physical effort than any previous project. In 2022, the series wrapped up its story after 24 episodes aired.
Despite the lights of Los Angeles, she never cut her ties with Iceland. In 2022, she starred in Svar við bréfi Helgu under the direction of Ása Helga Hjörleifsdóttir. It's a rural drama set in the 1940s that explores adultery and the social conventions of the era. Intimate stories like this one often serve as her refuge among big digital-effects productions.
In 2023, she appeared in the film The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die. The Netflix production served as the final chapter in the story of Uhtred of Bebbanburg. Playing Queen Skade required a coldness that contrasted with her more vulnerable roles in independent cinema. Her career constantly moves between the mud of historical productions and European minimalism.
And betting on understated style usually pays off for her.
The Icelandic industry remains her main base of operations for author-driven projects. In 2024, she got involved in developing new local stories that seek international funding without losing the essence of the North. The distribution deal for her latest film in the United States closed for 1.2 million euros at the Cannes market.
