Hilary Duff wasn't the first Disney child star, but she was the first to rake in millions before turning eighteen. In 2001, the premiere of Lizzie McGuire changed the California company's books. It wasn't just a teen television series. It was a sprawling brand that sold bedsheets, toothbrushes and platinum records while its star tried to figure out how the industry worked.
The film based on the series grossed $42 million in the United States in 2003. That year, Duff was Hollywood's most bankable face for young audiences. Her girl-next-door image without major eccentricities connected with an audience that was beginning to consume multimedia products on a massive scale.
But early success usually comes with a very short expiration date in major studio offices.
In 2003, she released the album Metamorphosis and sold five million copies. Music wasn't an artistic whim but a logical extension of her commercial contract. Duff filled stadiums and made films such as A Cinderella Story in 2004, while her team managed a schedule that left no room for rest.
The transition to professional maturity was a minefield of harsh criticism. In 2006, she starred in Material Girls alongside her sister Haylie, and the box office result was a disaster. The trade press began questioning whether her career would survive the end of her teen years.
She tried to step away from the commercial circuit with riskier projects. In 2008, she appeared in War, Inc. alongside John Cusack, playing an Asian pop star far removed from her usual image. It was a bold move.
And the bet didn't quite pay off.
For almost a decade, Duff stayed in the background, appearing in one-off episodes of series like Gossip Girl in 2009. Her priority shifted to managing her own personal brand and writing young adult novels. In 2010, she published Elixir and made it onto the bestseller lists without needing a movie release in three thousand theaters.
Television helped revive her public profile when movies turned their backs on her. In 2015, she joined the cast of Younger to play Kelsey Peters, an ambitious editor in New York. The series ran for seven seasons and proved she could carry an adult comedy without the backing of the Disney machine.
In 2019, she tried to revive the character that made her famous with a return to Lizzie McGuire for a streaming platform. The project was canceled after two episodes were shot because the scripts were too adult for the company's editorial line. Duff wanted to portray a thirty-year-old woman facing real problems.
Disney wanted to keep the memory intact.
In 2022, she took the lead role in How I Met Your Father for Hulu. The series aimed to replicate the success of its predecessor with a more diverse approach suited to modern times. Duff earned $400,000 per episode during the production of this sitcom.
The network canceled the series in September 2023 after airing only two seasons.
