Indya Moore left home in the Bronx at fourteen. It was an escape she needed to survive a family environment that did not accept her identity. The New York foster care system became her immediate reality as she looked for a place for herself in the professional modeling world.
And she found it.
In 2017, she landed her first film role in Saturday Church. It was an independent project shot on a tight budget that explored the lives of young people seeking refuge in a West Village church. The experience showed her that acting could be a real profession.
But the big shift came in 2018 with the premiere of Pose. Ryan Murphy was looking for authenticity for its series about 1980s ballroom culture, and Moore landed the role of Angel Evangelista. Filming on real New York locations brought visibility back to a generation Hollywood had ignored for decades.
Moore brought raw vulnerability to the character of Angel across the show's three seasons. Her earnings from the first episodes helped pay the rent on a modest apartment in a safe neighborhood.
In 2019, Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world. The recognition came with her first cover for Elle US. The issue was a technical and commercial milestone, since it was the first time the magazine had chosen someone with a nonbinary identity for its cover.
Moore signed advertising deals with brands such as Louis Vuitton and Calvin Klein. Brands wanted her aesthetic, but Moore insisted that her presence carry an activist message. In 2019, Moore also appeared in Queen & Slim, playing a supporting role that cemented her move from television to big-screen films.
The system doesn't always forgive.
Moore has spoken openly about the mental exhaustion that comes with representing an entire community under the media spotlight. Hollywood often pigeonholes trans performers into stories of trauma or marginalization. So her strategy has been to diversify her roles into much more commercial genres.
In 2021, she appeared in the horror film Escape Room: Tournament of Champions. The shoot took place in South Africa and demanded a level of physical effort Moore had never experienced before. It was a $15 million production aimed at drawing young audiences back to movie theaters after the global closures.
Moore founded the production company Beetlefruit Media to develop stories that often sit on the margins of major studios. She didn't want to rely solely on the scripts her agents sent her. In 2023, she joined the cast of the blockbuster Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom to play Karshon.
For this role in the DC universe, the production used advanced digital effects and motion capture. It was a complex technical experience in which Moore spent much of her time in front of green screens. In 2024, she lent her voice to the Marvel animated series Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.
It wasn't all red carpets.
Moore's career remains tied to advocacy for children's rights within the American foster care system. In 2023, Moore worked with various organizations to improve the living conditions of young people leaving foster care upon turning 18.
Her character's screen time in the Aquaman sequel was cut to less than five minutes after the final edit.
