Izabela Vidovic is not the product of a casting algorithm or an aggressive marketing campaign. She was born in Chicago in 2001 and grew up in a home where Croatian was the main language. Her parents, with roots in Bosnia and Croatia, enrolled her in local theater productions when she was barely seven. Before turning ten, she had already played lead roles in classics such as Mary Poppins and Annie.
In 2013, Hollywood took notice of her for a specific reason. She played the daughter of Jason Statham in the action film Homefront. It was no minor or merely decorative role. She had to carry high-tension scenes opposite a script written by Sylvester Stallone, and she did it with a composure unusual for her age.
And the gamble paid off.
That film debut in action cinema didn't typecast her in physical roles. Quite the opposite. It showed she could handle the pressure of a major shoot without losing her naturalness. Vidovic has always projected a maturity that runs well ahead of her actual age.
Her mass recognition came in 2017 with the release of Wonder. In this film, she played Via, the older sister of a boy with a severe facial deformity. Her work here was precise. She avoided cheap melodrama and captured the quiet isolation that siblings of children with special needs often experience.
International critics stressed that she was the true emotional anchor of the story. But Vidovic didn't let herself be dazzled by the spotlight of awards ceremonies. She chose instead to diversify her television work to build experience across different genres and formats.
Her career doesn't follow the path of instant stardom.
Between 2015 and 2018, she took part in long-running projects such as The Fosters and Supergirl. On the latter, she had the responsibility of playing the younger version of Kara Danvers. She didn't simply copy the adult lead's mannerisms. She built a distinct identity for the character during her formative years on Earth.
In 2019 she joined the cast for the return of Veronica Mars. It was a smart move to connect with a more mature audience that knows its way around the noir genre. Still, her biggest ambition has always been behind the camera. Together with her mother, she founded Almost Normal Productions to develop her own projects.
This producing side isn't just a whim of a famous actress. In 2021, she actively worked on The Sex Lives of College Girls while managing script development for her own company. They are looking for stories with a strong European component and a sensibility that moves away from the usual tropes of American romantic comedies.
But the film business requires patience.
In 2024, her production company focused on creating content that explores the identity of the Balkan diaspora. Vidovic writes and reviews scripts meant to be shot on real locations across Eastern Europe to preserve visual authenticity. She prefers creative control over inflated profit margins.
Almost Normal Productions operates with a fixed technical team of fewer than ten people.
