Jack Gleeson was twelve years old when he appeared for a few seconds opposite Christian Bale in Christopher Nolan's fictional London. That boy who received a Batman gadget in a dark suburb had no idea his face would end up being the most hated on world television. In 2005, his role in Batman Begins was a small detail in a filmography that was just getting started.
In 2011, the premiere of Game of Thrones arrived. The HBO series needed a visceral villain, and Gleeson delivered a performance loaded with sadism that was completely removed from his real personality. Up close, the actor was always a brilliant student from Cork with a dry sense of humor.
Then he decided to stop.
At the age of twenty-one, he announced he was leaving professional acting. There were no big dramas or tearful press releases. He simply enrolled at Trinity College Dublin to study Philosophy and Theology. He wanted a life where public recognition wasn't the currency and the pressure of fame didn't dictate his schedule.
He founded the company Collapsing Horse Theatre Company, where he worked on production and puppet theater. It was an environment where he could control every creative aspect without the pressure of millions of viewers. Yet the weight of the industry kept looking for him despite his voluntary retreat from the Hollywood spotlight.
Six years passed before he stood in front of a camera again. In 2020, he appeared in the BBC series Out of Her Mind. It was a low-key comeback that avoided any comparison with his past in Westeros. Gleeson looked for small projects to rediscover his love of the craft, away from the media noise of the past.
In 2023, he joined the cast of In the Land of Saints and Sinners alongside Liam Neeson. In this production filmed in Donegal, he played a young hitman in a rural, violent Ireland. His focus on supporting roles let him regain the energy of the film set without the weight of carrying the movie as its lead.
Anonymity was his priority.
In 2024, his casting in the series House of Guinness for Netflix was confirmed. Filming focused on locations in Dublin and New York under the direction of Steven Knight. Gleeson plays Byron Reed in this story about Ireland's most famous brewing dynasty.
So his return to big-budget projects happened gradually. In 2025, his schedule included promoting this production that explores the consequences of Benjamin Guinness's death. Filming of all eight episodes was completed following the quality standards of major British productions.
The contract for this series set a filming schedule tailored to the needs of an ensemble cast.
