Jacob Gibson didn't become a success by luck or a fortunate casting algorithm. Before stepping into Usopp's shoes, he spent years honing his craft at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). There he learned that acting is a muscle trained through repetition and a lot of silence.
And the gamble paid off.
During his formative years, he learned to control a physical energy that would later become his trademark. He wasn't chasing instant fame on social media. He took part in experimental theater productions where mistakes were part of the daily learning process.
His first appearances on the small screen came with brief roles in medical dramas. In 2018, he appeared in The Resident and shortly after joined Grey’s Anatomy. These were jobs with only a few days of filming, but they paid the bills while he waited for a bigger project.
But the real change came when he joined the cast of Greenleaf between 2019 and 2020. On this Oprah Winfrey Network series, he was able to explore a denser dramatic range. It was the ideal proving ground for understanding how a high-level production works under punishing deadlines.
Acting is a refuge.
The announcement of his casting for the live-action version of One Piece in 2021 raised doubts among the manga's most devoted fans. Playing a character as theatrical as Usopp required a precise balance between physical comedy and human vulnerability. Gibson chose to ignore the media noise and focus on demanding technical training.
Six months of filming in South Africa changed his view of the large-scale film industry. It's not the same as shooting a scene in a papier-mâché hospital as it is living on a ship built to full scale facing the ocean. The chemistry with his castmates was the engine that carried the production through the toughest months of 2022.
In 2023, the series' world premiere put him on the global entertainment map. Critics praised his ability to humanize a character who tends to be over the top on paper. He made Usopp's fears feel real to an audience unfamiliar with the original material.
Gibson prefers to keep his feet on the ground.
His career going forward involves diversifying across genres to avoid being typecast as the comic relief. In 2024, he focused on expanding his range by taking part in independent short films and voice-over projects where his voice is his only tool. The contract for the next seasons of the pirate series secures his financial stability for the next five years.
In 2025, production on the new episodes involves a logistics operation of more than a thousand crew members in Cape Town. Jacob Gibson spends free time between takes on analog photography and writing their own scripts. The budget per episode exceeds 15 million dollars at this stage of production.
