Emily Rudd knew she was going to be Nami long before Netflix put money on the table. It wasn't a newcomer actress's hunch but a technical obsession. In 2021, the actress from Minnesota cut her hair and dyed it a subtle orange, just so the algorithms and casting directors would start seeing her as Eiichiro Oda's navigator.
And the gamble paid off.
She grew up in Saint Paul, in an environment far removed from the spotlight of Los Angeles. She studied theater, but her first real contact with the industry came through music. Between 2013 and 2016, she starred in music videos for artists such as Justin Bieber and Skrillex. These were brief jobs of barely three minutes that helped her understand how a film camera works before stepping onto a conventional television set.
But Rudd was looking for more than being an aesthetic face in a music video. In 2017, she joined Sea Change, and shortly after she landed a role in the anthology series The Romanoffs. It was her first experience with a high-budget production where the script mattered more than the visuals. For her, acting has always been a matter of physical and mental preparation.
The real turning point in her career came with the Fear Street trilogy, released in 2021. Playing Cindy Berman demanded a physical toll that definitively moved her away from her earlier phase. While filming in the Georgia woods, she had to run, scream and handle heavy tools in artificial rain for weeks.
That was the moment the industry stopped seeing her as a model who acted.
That horror experience was key to what came next. Rudd isn't just an actress who fits the aesthetic of anime. She is a black belt in karate and an athlete who performs much of her action work without relying constantly on stunt doubles. In 2022, she shot the movie Moonshot and joined the Amazon Prime Video series Hunters, building a profile that blends drama with pure action.
In 2023, the premiere of the first season of One Piece confirmed that casting had been the production's biggest win. Rudd became the emotional anchor of a story that carried the skepticism of millions of fans of the original material. Her take on Nami avoided the excesses of the cartoon in favor of a far more human and dry vulnerability.
The casting process for this series lasted almost three years. Producers were looking for actors who could handle shoots of more than seven months in Cape Town. In 2024, the actress returned to South Africa to begin filming the second season of the franchise. Projects like this demand near-total exclusivity, which limits her appearances in other smaller productions during filming cycles.
Critics accepted her work without reservations.
Despite the global fame that a streaming platform brings, her private life remains tightly controlled. Rudd prefers to talk about her love of drawing and Japanese animation rather than the internal details of her contract. In 2025, her schedule is dominated by advertising commitments tied to the success of the series and the preparation of new fantasy projects that make use of her martial arts training.
The budget per episode for the first season of her pirate series topped 17 million dollars.
