Peter Gadiot trained at the Drama Centre London under a discipline that bordered on the military. The school was known for grinding down the egos of aspiring actors before allowing them onto a professional stage. Before finishing his training, he already knew that the British market doesn't always have room for people of mixed heritage. His father is Dutch and his mother is Mexican. That genetic combination gave him a physical ambiguity that casting directors took years to understand.

In 2010, he made his debut in the series My Spy Family with a small role. It was a necessary but low-key first step that barely covered the bills for an actor starting from scratch. So he decided to move to Los Angeles to look for celebrities with more edge.

Luck changed in California.

The Haven of Free-to-Air Television

In 2013, he landed the role of Cyrus in Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. The ABC series was looking for a genius with charisma, and Gadiot brought an elegance that saved several scenes from a somewhat erratic script. But the show was canceled after a single season due to low ratings.

That setback forced him to rethink his strategy in an industry that punishes other people's failures. He spent months going to auditions without clear results until the project came along that redefined his career. In 2016, he joined the cast of Queen of the South to play James Valdez.

He worked on this production for five years. The character demanded absolute physical restraint and a command of silence that Gadiot refined season after season. Filming of the series officially wrapped in 2021 after sixty-two episodes, in which his face became recognizable across half the world.

There was no turning back.

From Forest Mysteries to Netflix's Sea Adventures

In 2021 he joined the phenomenon of Yellowjackets. His portrayal of Adam Pratt sparked endless theories among fans of the series due to the suspicion he projected on screen. But his biggest media challenge was yet to come with an adaptation that many considered impossible to pull off successfully outside of animation.

In 2023, he played Shanks in the live-action adaptation of One Piece. Netflix invested massive budgets to bring Eiichiro Oda's manga to life, and Gadiot's role was key to setting the emotional tone of the story. The actor had to shoot his scenes in Cape Town under strict security measures to prevent leaks of the costume designs.

And the risk was worth it.

The series was renewed for a second season shortly after its premiere. Gadiot balances these jobs with his interest in directing and writing. In 2014, he had already tested the waters with the short film 12-7, which explored themes of identity and personal isolation.

While filming his projects, he tends to keep a low profile on social media. He prefers to focus on social causes such as the fight against human trafficking. In 2012, he crossed the Atlantic in a rowing boat to raise funds against modern slavery. The journey lasted 39 days and left physical after-effects that took him months to fully overcome.
