Katey Sagal wasn't seeking fame in front of a camera. Her original plan was to make a living from music and spend the 1970s touring stadiums as a backup singer for Bette Midler. But the entertainment industry in Los Angeles runs on inertia, and she ended up on a television set almost by accident.
The daughter of director Boris Sagal, she grew up surrounded by scripts and clapperboards, in an environment that was familiar to her but foreign to her ambitions. In 1985, she appeared in the series Mary, and just two years later her life took a different turn.
The casting call for Married... with Children in 1987 was the moment that changed everything. Sagal showed up wearing a red wig she had bought herself and an attitude that defied every stereotype of the housewife of the era.
And the gamble paid off.
For eleven seasons, she played Peggy Bundy without sliding into cheap parody. The character demanded a tricky balance between selfishness and family loyalty, which she handled with pinpoint precision. The series became a ratings phenomenon that reached 259 episodes before it ended in 1997.
Many actors get trapped in a role like this forever. But she used her voice to distance herself from the physical character. In 1999, she began voicing Leela in Futurama and gave the cyclops a humanity that was not originally written into Matt Groening's drawings.
Her ability to work in different registers allowed her to leap from raunchy comedy to the darkest drama without missing a beat.
In 2008, the project came along that finally pulled her out of Peggy Bundy's shadow. Her husband, Kurt Sutter, created Sons of Anarchy with a role designed to showcase her icy stare. Gemma Teller Morrow was not a supporting character but the force pulling the strings of a California motorcycle club.
Sagal's performance was so raw that the specialized press had to surrender. She won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Series in 2011 after decades of steady work in front of the screen.
But not everything went smoothly in her career.
In 2021, she starred in Rebel, a series inspired by the life of Erin Brockovich that ABC canceled after only five episodes aired. The flop was loud because the production had a considerable budget and a very aggressive marketing campaign.
Sagal always returns to her roots when the spotlight fades. In 2013, she released the album Covered and proved that her voice still has the same power it had when she toured with Bob Dylan in her youth. She isn't an actress who sings, but a musician who acts to pay the bills.
Her role as Louise Goldufski in The Conners since 2018 brings a much-needed maturity to a comedy born from the ashes of a media scandal. Sagal understands better than anyone how to survive the shipwrecks of the television industry.
The industry recognizes her as a tireless worker who doesn't shy away from supporting roles if the script makes sense.
Her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was unveiled on September 9, 2014 at 7021 Hollywood Boulevard.
