Samantha Hanratty landed her first audition before she could read fluently. Born in Arizona in 1995, she was part of that generation of child actors who grew up under the lights of California studios without a backup plan. By 2007, she already had appearances in mass-audience series such as The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and That's So Raven.
And the industry took notice.
Unlike many names from her generation, she didn't seek refuge in pop music or platinum records. Her goal was the screen. In 2009, she starred in An American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strong, and that project showed her ability to carry a production on her shoulders. Nearly two decades of nonstop work back her up in an industry that often chews up minors before they reach the age of legal adulthood.
But the real breakthrough didn't come from the clean comedies or the ensemble casts of Disney Channel. The true Samantha Hanratty emerged when she decided to explore the edges of sanity in much darker characters.
In 2017, she played Kassidi in Shameless, and it was a clear statement of intent. The character was an obsessive, erratic young woman who blew up the stability of the Gallagher family. That was when audiences discovered that Hanratty was at ease with discomfort. She wasn't trying to win over the camera but to provoke a visceral reaction of rejection in the viewer.
There was no turning back.
That transitional stage was essential for moving away from the perfect-daughter roles she was given early on. In 2019, she appeared in the film Skin in the Game, where she explored the drama of human trafficking with a rawness that definitively set her apart from any youthful label. So when the project that would change her career arrived, she already knew what it was like to work in environments of intense emotional pressure.
In 2021, the series Yellowjackets put her at the center of international critical debate. Playing the younger version of Misty Quigley was a major technical challenge. Misty is a character who walks the line of psychopathy while maintaining a desperate need for social acceptance. Hanratty made audiences empathize with a teenager capable of destroying a black box so she wouldn't be rescued.
Filming in the forests of Canada during 2021 and 2022 demanded a physical endurance that few actors of her profile had shown until then. But she drew on her previous experience to handle the pressure of a series that quickly became a cult phenomenon. In 2023, the second season confirmed that her performance was the psychological backbone of the story of the past.
And the gamble paid off.
Off camera, she maintains an active profile advocating for mental health and openly shares her own experiences on set. In 2024, she announced her engagement to Christian Cimino and continued to be involved in projects that prioritize psychological suspense over conventional horror. Her contract for the following seasons of her main series includes exclusivity clauses that limit her appearances in independent films until 2026.
In 2025, production of the new episodes of her flagship series moved to locations in Northern California for the network's budget and logistical reasons.
