In London, in 1843, Ebenezer Scrooge runs his accounting firm with an iron fist and not a shred of sympathy. An incredulous, bitter and lonely man, he cannot stand Christmas. On Christmas Eve he is selfish with everyone: he refuses to donate anything to the poor and turns down his nephew Fred’s invitation to the family dinner. His loyal, underpaid employee Bob Cratchit then asks him for the day off so he can spend the holidays with his own family. Scrooge, of course, is not willing to grant it, and that is where the conflict begins. Robert Zemeckis directs the film, and Jim Carrey brings the protagonist to life.

[first lines; looks at dead Marley] Yes. Quite dead...as a doornail.
You will be haunted by three spirits.
I am the Ghost of Christmas Past.
You have never seen the likes of me before?
Stop! Back away, praddock! [removes two coins from Marley's eyes] Tuppence is tuppence.
Expect the first tomorrow when the bell tolls one.
