Jason Gedrick grew up in Chicago under the surname Gedroic, with the notion that movies were something that happened to other people. He left Drake University after his first year because New York auditions mattered more than textbooks. Before turning twenty, he already had one foot on the sets of Bad Boys and Risky Business, filling out the background as an extra.
In 1985, he landed his first meaningful role in The Heavenly Kid. That fantasy comedy put his face on the industry's radar, but it was the prelude to something much louder. Because military aviation was about to determine his immediate future.
In 1986, screens around the world filled with F-16 fighter jets with the release of Iron Eagle. Gedrick played Doug Masters, and the film grossed over $24 million in the United States alone. That launched him into a league where box office clout outweighed acting talent.
But teen movies have an expiration date.
In the late eighties, he tried to break away from typecasting with Rooftops, directed by Robert Wise. It was a risky move that blended dance and urban drama on the rooftops of New York. Critics were not kind, and audiences started looking toward other new faces.
Television saved his career when leading-man roles for handsome actors began to dry up in film. In 1995, he took on the challenge of playing Neil Arestrup in Murder One. It wasn't mainstream commercial cinema (it was something much rawer and more demanding).
And it worked.
His ability to hold long close-ups allowed him to work with Steven Bochco on several projects. In 1996, he starred in EZ Streets, a police drama that barely lasted one season but is now studied as a precursor to prestige television. It was a complete ratings failure despite strong reviews.
He appeared in Ally McBeal and Desperate Housewives, playing the distinguished leading man. But the real change came when he started taking on characters with much grayer morality. In 2011, he joined the cast of Luck to work under Michael Mann.
Gedrick played Jerry in 10 episodes before the series was canceled over incidents involving horses on set. It was a hard blow for a production that aimed for the top of the HBO lineup.
In 2012, he stepped into the shoes of George Novikov for the seventh season of Dexter. Playing the manager of a strip club tied to the Ukrainian mafia gave him an edge of danger he had never exploited before. He was no longer seeking the viewer's sympathy.
But his best work came with the role of Ray Sebastian in Bosch in 2015. In that Amazon production, he showed he could carry a suspense plot without raising his voice. Restraint became his best professional tool.
Gedrick has maintained a steady pace without major peaks of fame ever since.
In 2023, he appeared in the series The Rookie, playing a character with a three-episode arc. Filming took place on locations in Los Angeles under the technical direction of Bill Roe. The contract stipulated twelve-hour shooting days for nighttime exterior scenes.
