Jaycee Chan Jo-Ming was born in Los Angeles in 1982 under a shadow that would have crushed any other aspiring artist. He is the son of Jackie Chan and Taiwanese actress Lin Feng-jiao. But he did not set out to copy his father's flying kicks when he entered the entertainment industry. He preferred guitar and piano to high-risk stunt choreography on the rooftops of Hong Kong.
His debut was a lesson in media survival.
In 2004, he starred in The Twins Effect II. Critics were harsh, but audiences responded at the box office. That started a run of films in which he tried to move away from pure action and find a place in drama. In 2005, he worked on 2 Young under director Derek Yee. That role earned him a nomination for Best Newcomer at the Hong Kong Film Awards and proved he could hold the screen on his own, beyond the family name.
Because Jaycee always seemed more at home in romantic drama than in choreographed fight scenes.
The year 2014 permanently and violently damaged his public image. Beijing police arrested him at his home for drug possession and for allowing others to use drugs on his property. He spent six months in a Chinese prison after a confession that was televised and analyzed in detail across the Asian continent. His father did not intervene on his behalf and publicly apologized for his son's behavior.
That incident kept him out of the spotlight for a long time due to the strict moral standards of the Chinese entertainment industry. But in 2016, he returned with a supporting role in Railroad Tigers. It was a risky move by the studio that sparked intense debate about redemption for public figures in the country.
And the gamble never fully repaired his commercial reputation.
In 2021, she managed to premiere her first feature film as a director, Good Night Beijing. The production suffered several delays before reaching commercial theaters due to the market's sensitivity toward her public image. The film aimed to portray the lives of young people in the capital, but the result was modest and passed through theaters largely unnoticed.
The Chinese market is unforgiving toward mistakes from the past.
In the years that followed, she focused more on music rights management and executive production from behind the scenes. In 2023, she was linked to several investment projects in the entertainment sector in Hong Kong and Singapore. Her public appearances are now rare and limited to fashion events or very specific presentations, where she avoids questions about her private life.
Good Night Beijing grossed barely $3 million during its opening weekend.
