Jessica Lowe

Humor as a survival shield

Jessica Lowe understands that physical comedy is hard work. Born in Samoa but raised in Albuquerque, a world far removed from the red carpets of Los Angeles. Before stepping onto a film set, she spent years on the improv circuit at The Groundlings and Upright Citizens Brigade. There she learned that to make people laugh, you have to be willing to look like a fool.

In 2014, she played the blonde, over-the-top stepmother in the movie Blended. It was her first big break on the big screen, alongside Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. Many critics singled her out as the best part of a film that won over almost no one. But she made her gift for slapstick stand out above the script.

Her training at The Groundlings explains almost everything.

And that training led her straight to television. In 2016, she joined the series Wrecked, a parody of Lost in which she played Florence. Over three seasons, Lowe proved she could carry the weight of an ensemble plot without losing momentum. The show was filmed in difficult locations in Puerto Rico and Fiji, which demanded real physical stamina behind the cameras.

After thirty recorded episodes, the series ended in 2018.

Conquering Cable and Streaming

Lowe was not chasing drama to get the industry to take her seriously. In 2019, she joined the cast of The Righteous Gemstones on HBO. Playing Lindy Lissons let her work in a different league of religious satire. She worked under Danny McBride and held her own alongside actors with decades of experience in the genre.

Her name then began to appear in projects with greater political and social weight. In 2022, she joined Minx, a series set in the world of 1970s erotic magazines. Her character, Bambi, broke the mold of the empty model to show a woman with overwhelming practical intelligence. The series was unexpectedly canceled by HBO Max but was rescued by Starz in 2023.

The industry took its time to understand her range.

But Lowe used that time to diversify her work. She voiced characters in animated series such as Bob’s Burgers and Central Park. Voice work demands a technical precision she had already mastered during her years of live theater. She didn't need the audience to see her face to land the punchline of a joke.

In 2024, she appeared in the movie Drugstore June, playing Kelly. That same year, she recorded several episodes of the series The Big Cigar, directed by Don Cheadle. The production focused on the escape to Cuba of Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton. In 2024, she also joined the cast of the comedy The 4:30 Movie, directed by Kevin Smith.

Smith's movie was filmed entirely at Smodcastle Cinemas in New Jersey.
