Lamorne Morris is not the typical actor who lands in Hollywood by pure chance. In Chicago he spent years sharpening his wit at the Second City while looking for any opening in local television to pay the bills.
His big break came in 2006 with a hosting job at the BET network. There he learned to handle live timing and pure improvisation in front of the camera. But movies remained a distant goal, showing up only in commercials and tiny roles.
It only worked halfway.
Success is often a matter of lucky breaks. Before moving to Los Angeles, he sold computer servers (a job he hated) while waiting for a call that took years to come.
In 2011, the production of New Girl faced a major logistical problem. Damon Wayans Jr. had to leave the series after the pilot episode due to prior commitments to another project. The gap was huge, and the casting team was looking for someone who could fit into an already established group dynamic.
He joined the cast late.
Morris joined the show to play Winston Bishop starting in the second episode. At first the character was a former basketball player searching for his identity (a copy of the previous one). But the writers soon discovered that the actor shone brightest when the material he was given was at its strangest.
Winston became a man obsessed with cats, puzzles and badly executed pranks. This transition felt organic because Morris brought an erratic energy that kept the show from sliding into dull sitcom routine. Seven seasons and 146 episodes later, the world knew who that guy in the impossible shirts was.
But typecasting is a deadly trap in the American industry. So after the series ended in 2018, the actor sought out projects that demanded more from him than quick jokes.
In 2020, he starred in Woke (a mix of live action and animation), exploring systemic racism from a satirical angle. The series ran for two seasons and showed he could carry a political storyline without losing his naturalness.
Then came his definitive change of direction in 2023. In the fifth season of Fargo, he played Agent Witt Farr. There was no room here for mugging or for the absurd humor of his earlier work.
Morris built a sober, vulnerable character that earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor. It was the professional recognition he needed to stop casting directors from seeing him only as TV's funny sidekick.
In 2024, he took on the challenge of playing Garrett Morris in the movie Saturday Night. Jason Reitman's film chronicles the 90 minutes before the first broadcast of the legendary sketch show on 1975. For this role, he had to learn to play the piano and spend months studying old archival recordings.
The gamble paid off.
The production of this film was planned around 30 days of intensive shooting on 16mm film to capture the texture of the era. The film's final budget was estimated at $25 million.
