Lauren Lapkus started out improvising in basements in Chicago before anyone knew how to spell her last name. In 2003, she joined the iO Theater to understand the mechanics of laughter. There she learned that humor doesn't depend on the script but on the ability to sit through silence without blinking in front of a demanding audience.
Physical comedy was her natural language.
She moved to Los Angeles in 2010. She wasn't chasing fame quickly, but she ended up on the radar of casting directors thanks to her ability to create quirky characters in a split second. In 2013, she landed the role of Susan Fischer in Orange Is the New Black, and her face quickly became familiar in millions of homes.
That naive prison guard gave her the visibility she needed to negotiate better contracts. But Lapkus didn't want to be just the funny sidekick of a Netflix series. That's why she kept a foot in podcasting with the launch of With Special Guest Lauren Lapkus in 2014.
Mainstream TV often boxes actors into overly rigid lines. Lapkus broke that pattern by appearing regularly on Comedy Bang! Bang!, where her characters bordered on pure absurdity. Mastering the long-form improv format allowed her to work without a safety net on much bigger projects.
In 2015, she appeared in Jurassic World. She played Vivian, a control room technician who provided the human counterpoint amid all the computer-generated dinosaurs. It was her first major studio production, and it gave her a close look at how the machinery of a global box office hit works.
And the phone didn't stop ringing.
Her style is built on distorting everyday reality. She needs no prosthetics or heavy makeup to become someone else, because she relies on her voice and a facial expressiveness reminiscent of silent-era comedians. As a result, her sketch show appearances were always the most talked-about moments of the night.
The release of The Wrong Missy in 2020 marked a turning point in her career outside the niche circuit. In this Happy Madison production, she plays a woman who overflows with energy and is terrifying to the lead character. Nearly six million people watched the film in its first week of airing.
Many critics didn't get the over-the-top tone of the show. Lapkus didn't mind, because her goal was to explore the limits of cringe comedy. For her, humor works best when it makes the viewer uncomfortable and forces them to look away.
Risk has always been her creative engine.
In 2023, she voiced several characters in the animated series Digman! to stretch her vocal range. That same year, she also appeared in the film The Out-Laws. Her ability to move between voice work and live action defines a work pace that doesn't know downtime.
During 2024, she worked on the production of Drugstore June. In this project, she plays a young woman trying to solve a robbery in her small town while dealing with her own emotional immaturity. The film was shot on a tight budget that demanded maximum efficiency in every take.
For 2025, she is scheduled to appear in the second season of The Last of Us. Filming in Canada during 2024 demanded a dramatic range far removed from her beginnings in sketch comedy. Lapkus keeps adding credits to her filmography without much media noise.
She lives in Los Angeles with her family and keeps a low profile at industry events. Her contract for the HBO production was signed under strict confidentiality clauses that prevent her from revealing details about her character until the premiere. The per-episode salary for these gigs exceeds six figures.
