Joe Cole wasn't planning to become an actor while selling rugs in south London. Their entry into the National Youth Theatre came from a need to escape a gray future more than from an academic calling. In 2010, they landed a small role in the police drama The Bill and realized their face fit well into British working-class fiction.
His time on Skins in 2012 allowed him to play Luke, a character that already hinted at his ability to convey contained violence. But the big turning point came when he received the script for a series about gangsters in Birmingham.
And the gamble paid off.
For four seasons, he played John Shelby in Peaky Blinders. The series became a global phenomenon, but Cole felt his character had no room to grow in the shadow of Cillian Murphy. In 2017, he decided it was time to leave because he did not want to spend years as the sidekick who just nods along at family meetings.
Many agents advised him to stick with the comfort of a hit production. But he preferred to seek out projects where the dramatic weight rested on his shoulders. In 2017, he starred in A Prayer Before Dawn, and the shoot was a physical ordeal inside a real prison in Thailand.
He trained with local boxers and worked with real inmates to lend authenticity to the story of Billy Moore. He won the Best Actor award at the British Independent Film Awards that year. It proved he could carry a film on his own, without flat caps or fake accents.
In 2018, she appeared in the episode Hang the DJ of the series Black Mirror. It was a different kind of role, where she explored a romantic vulnerability the industry had not allowed her to show until then.
That broke his typecasting as an aggressive criminal.
Joe Cole chooses his roles based on the physical effort they demand. In 2020, he took on the role of Sean Wallace in Gangs of London, and the fight choreography became the center of his daily routine. Director Gareth Evans demanded pinpoint precision in every punch, and Cole performed most of his own high-risk scenes.
But his career has not been all action and adrenaline. In 2022, he played Harry Palmer in the new version of The Ipcress File. It was a tough challenge, because he had to take over a character that Michael Caine had made his own in the 1960s.
In 2023, he joined the cast of A Small Light to play Jan Gies. The miniseries tells the story of those who helped hide Anne Frank's family in Amsterdam. It was a restrained shoot where emotional control mattered more than brute force.
In 2024, he filmed the thriller Nightsleeper for the BBC.
The production of this six-episode series centered on a hijacked train traveling from Glasgow to London. Filming took place almost entirely on a closed set to heighten the feeling of technical claustrophobia. The international distribution deal was closed for a record sum before the first minute aired.
