Josh Coxx didn't always have that extra X at the end of his last name. In his early contracts, he was listed as Joshua Cox. But the actors' union rules are strict, and a clash with another professional forced him to find a visual alternative that wouldn't alter his identity. It was a practical decision for an actor who has always understood his craft from a place of usefulness.
He landed in Los Angeles with classical New York training under his belt. But the stage doesn't pay the bills in a city that lives for the camera. He started out landing small parts in shows that today only the most devoted TV fans remember.
His first big break came in 1994 with a military uniform that would stay with him for years.
He played Lieutenant David Corwin in Babylon 5. What was initially meant to be a brief appearance became a recurring presence over 35 episodes. And he did it without fuss. Coxx understood that in the science fiction of the nineties, restraint was a safe haven amid all the latex makeup.
His real leap into financial stability came in 2000. The series Strong Medicine cast him as Peter Riggs. Over six seasons and 131 episodes, he was the friendly face of a medical drama that ran like clockwork in cable ratings.
There he learned to handle technical language on camera. Acting in a medical drama requires almost choreographed precision with the instruments.
It was his period of greatest public exposure.
Around that time, he married actress Wendy Braun. The couple decided that discretion would be their currency in an industry that tends to devour early marriages.
But being typecast is the great fear of any working supporting actor. When the series ended in 2006, Coxx had to return to square one of auditions to prove there was life beyond the fictional Philadelphia hospital.
The industry sees him as a safe bet. If a casting director needs an FBI agent, a detective or a high-ranking officer, they know Coxx will deliver without holding up the shoot. In 2014, he joined the cast of The Last Ship as Petty Officer Joseph Meylan.
And the gamble paid off.
His ability to blend into any setting has allowed him to take part in big-budget productions such as Thor in 2011. There, he played a SHIELD agent. It's a brief role, but it shows how well he fits into the Hollywood studio system.
In 2023, he took part in the new version of Quantum Leap, bringing the character Richard to life. He doesn't seek the spotlight at all, preferring the longevity of someone who works every year without needing to appear on the covers of fashion magazines.
His per-episode pay on network productions usually follows the union scale for actors with more than twenty years of experience.
