Julie Hagerty had no idea her life was about to change because of an airline safety manual. Her debut in Airplane! (1980) was not the result of years of training at the Actors Studio. She was working as a model in New York and had barely any real experience in front of the camera.
But the Zucker brothers were looking for exactly that lack of acting flash. They wanted an angelic face that could deliver the most absurd lines in the script without cracking a smile. Hagerty was paid 30,000 dollars for that role, which would go on to gross more than 80 million at the U.S. box office.
And the gamble paid off perfectly.
The film's success was so massive that the industry immediately tried to typecast her. In 1982, she reprised the role of Elaine in the franchise's sequel, but her real interest was in the stage. Her brother Conrad had founded a theater company in New York, and she took refuge there to truly learn the craft. She didn't want to be just the girl on the plane.
Woody Allen cast her in A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy (1982) because she saw in her a strange fragility. Hagerty has a high-pitched voice and a gaze that always seems to be somewhere else. That mix of distraction and sweetness let her work with directors such as Robert Altman on Beyond Therapy (1987).
Throughout the 1990s, her presence in major productions became more sporadic. She worked on What About Bob? (1991) alongside Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss. She was one of the few actresses able to keep up with Murray's improvisational pace without losing track of her character.
Many actors fade away once they stop headlining movie posters. Hagerty did the opposite. She specialized in supporting roles that are often the best part of the film. Her technique is built on silence and on a delayed reaction that creates a very funny discomfort for the viewer.
The secret is not to force the joke.
In 2019, she played Scarlett Johansson's mother in Marriage Story. Noah Baumbach wrote the role with the scattered energy Hagerty has perfected over the years. The film earned six Academy Award nominations and returned the actress to the forefront of critical acclaim.
She appeared in the comedy Murder Mystery (2023), produced by Happy Madison for Netflix. Filming took place in Atlanta during the summer months of 2022. The movie racked up millions of viewing hours in its first week on the platform.
In 2025, she lent her voice to the animated production The Bad Guys 2, produced by DreamWorks. The recording contract was signed under the standard SAG-AFTRA union terms following the contract negotiations of that period.
