Justin Bartha landed on the set of Gigli in 2003 at twenty-four, with the promising-newcomer label fresh out of New York University. The movie was a disaster of biblical proportions for critics. But Bartha survived the fallout because his role as Brian (a young man with an intellectual disability) was one of the few things salvaged from the media wreckage of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez.
He didn't want to be just a pretty face on movie posters.
Before that, he worked as a production assistant on Analyze This in 1999. He learned the craft from the cables and coffee up before stepping in front of the camera. Bartha has always kept one foot in the technical side and the other in acting.
In 2004, he got the break that changed his bank account. Jerry Bruckheimer cast him as Riley Poole in National Treasure. Bartha brought comic and tech-savvy counterpoint to a Nicolas Cage that was already in its most theatrical phase.
He made a computer expert character who wasn't the usual boring cliché.
The chemistry worked so well that he returned for the sequel to 2007, titled National Treasure: Book of Secrets. Between the two films, he appeared in romantic comedies such as Failure to Launch in 2006. But audiences already knew him as the clever guy with a quick comeback up his sleeve.
In 2009, Todd Phillips called him for a project that nobody expected would become a global phenomenon. In The Hangover, Bartha plays Doug. He's the character who disappears and forces the rest of the cast to search all over Nevada for him.
And the gamble paid off.
Although he spends much of the film off screen, his presence drives the story. The box office success was so massive that the trilogy wrapped up in 2013 with earnings that topped 1,400 million dollars worldwide. Bartha accepted that his role was the straight-laced man facing the madness of Zach Galifianakis.
Bartha never let Hollywood consume him entirely. In 2010 he made his Broadway debut in the play Lend Me a Tenor under the direction of Stanley Tucci. He prefers the risk of live theater to the comfort of production trailers.
In 2012, he starred in the series The New Normal. The show followed a gay couple searching for a surrogate and sparked intense debate on American television at the time. His face soon became a fixture in homes beyond movie theaters.
But his most solid television period came in 2017. He joined the cast of The Good Fight to play attorney Colin Morrello over two seasons. His contract ended in 2019 after appearing in seventeen episodes of the acclaimed legal drama.
In 2022 he reprised his best-known role for the Disney+ series National Treasure: Edge of History. It was a brief appearance designed for fans of the original franchise. He also appeared in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, released in 2024.
Bartha lives in New York and picks his projects with an unusually calm approach for the industry.
In 2024 he shot the independent drama The Phoenix alongside Melissa Leo. The film's budget barely reached five million dollars.
