Justin Hartley spent years in the purgatory of daytime soap operas before the industry took him seriously. In 2002, he joined the set of Passions to play Fox Crane and found that acting on a daily soap is the closest thing to working on an assembly line. He shot scenes at a frantic pace with barely any time to rehearse. That stage lasted until 2006 and taught him that television is a pure endurance industry.
And she made it happen.
In 2006, he put on Oliver Queen's leather suit in Smallville. Comic book fans are often merciless with adaptations, but Hartley handled the pressure with unusual calm. He wasn't the absolute lead of the show. But he stole every scene he appeared in with a mix of cynicism and vulnerability that wasn't in the original script.
Many actors get stuck in superhero roles forever. Hartley preferred to return to the grit of intense TV dramas. In 2014, he joined the cast of The Young and the Restless to play Adam Newman. That role earned him a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2016. It was the exact moment when casting directors at the major networks began to see something more than a square jaw.
His breakthrough came in 2016 with the premiere of This Is Us. Playing Kevin Pearson was an exercise in honesty about addiction and feelings of inadequacy. Hartley had to defend a character who, on paper, came across as unlikable. But he got audiences to sympathize with a man who had everything and still felt empty. He won the Screen Actors Guild Award in 2018 and 2019 along with the rest of the cast.
Nobody expected it to work so well.
Over the show's six seasons, the actor honed his gift for silence. In 2022, he starred for Netflix in the film The Noel Diary, looking to explore a slower, more romantic register. The project was shot in Connecticut and steered away from big production flourishes to focus on the dialogue. Hartley was looking for projects where creative control was real.
In 2024, he decided he no longer wanted to wait for the phone to ring to get his next job. He premiered Tracker, taking on the role of Colter Shaw and the title of executive producer. The series is based on the novel The Never Game by Jeffery Deaver. Hartley got involved in choosing the locations and the show's technical tone. Production moved to British Columbia to shoot on natural outdoor locations under challenging weather conditions.
Because control takes effort.
Unlike his early days at major studios, this stage of his career is defined by mobility. In 2024, the series Tracker drew massive ratings on CBS, topping ten million viewers per episode. Hartley now runs his own company, ChangeUp Productions. In 2025, he signed a deal with 20th Television to develop new scripted content without always having to be in front of the camera.
Filming the first season of his latest series required a crew of more than two hundred people in Vancouver.
