From the Mountains of Shillong to the Orchestra Pit

Karen David was born in India, but her passport reads like a map of influences spanning Canada and London. She studied at Berklee, which explains why her career cannot be understood without rhythm. In 2003 she released her first single and shortly after worked with A.R. Rahman on the musical Bombay Dreams. It was a period of technical learning where the voice took priority over the image.

Music was her first refuge.

Before jumping to American television, she worked on low-budget British productions. But her theater training in London allowed her to avoid the stereotyped roles Hollywood reserves for Asian actresses. That's because David always sought out characters with a dramatic weight that justified the shoot.

The Princess Who Didn't Need Rescuing

In 2015 Galavant arrived, and audiences discovered she could sing while wielding a sword. The ABC series ran for two seasons but gave her the boost she needed in Los Angeles. She played Princess Isabella with a tone that blended physical comedy with the most demanding vocal technique. And she did it on a set that devoured budgets because of its aesthetic ambition.

Her commitment to the fantasy genre continued shortly after.

In 2016 she took on the role of Jasmine in the series Once Upon a Time. It was a brief role but drew an average audience of 4 million viewers for the season premiere. The producers were looking for an imposing physical presence, and David met the network's technical requirements.

The Apocalypse and the Recording Booth

Her most dramatic change of tone came in 2019, when she joined the cast of Fear the Walking Dead. Her character introduced a storyline about radiation and guilt that stayed active until 2023. During those years of filming in Texas, she had to adapt her way of working to the extreme conditions of outdoor locations.

But David doesn't just stand in front of the camera.

In 2022 she starred in the TV movie When Christmas Was Young, where she also served as executive producer of the soundtrack. Creative control is now her top priority. So she began selecting projects where music and acting naturally converge without forcing the script.

In 2024 she provided her voice for the downloadable content of the video game Dead Island 2. The recording contract for this expansion was closed in less than three weeks after the initial sound tests.
