Kris Marshall spent years as the face of a UK phone company. That advertising campaign for BT brought him enviable financial security but nearly cost him the respect of the British industry. Before that, he had already shown a natural flair for tangled plots in the sitcom My Family.
In 2000, he began playing Nick Harper, and his talent for physical comedy pulled him out of complete obscurity. Audiences connected with the clumsy character who always seemed out of place. But Marshall didn't want to limit himself to the canned laughter of a television studio.
It was a risky decision.
He left the show in 2005 to pursue roles that demanded more than visual gags. In 2008, he was seriously injured in a car accident in Bristol that kept him out of the spotlight for months. That experience reshaped his career priorities and led him to choose his on-screen roles more carefully.
In 2003, he starred in the film Love Actually under the direction of Richard Curtis. He played Colin Frissell, and his trip to Wisconsin in search of love became one of the storylines audiences remember most. Curtis wanted someone both pathetic and charming at the same time, and Marshall fit the profile effortlessly.
But the actor avoided moving to Hollywood permanently. He preferred to stay in Europe and work on projects like Death at a Funeral in 2007, where he shared the cast with Matthew Macfadyen. British dark comedy has always been his comfort zone, although his biggest commercial hits came from public television.
In 2014, he took over the role of Inspector Humphrey Goodman in the series Death in Paradise. Replacing the previous lead was a complicated logistical and narrative challenge. Marshall moved to the island of Guadeloupe to shoot for six months a year and helped boost the ratings.
The audience responded with enthusiasm.
In 2017, he decided to leave the project because he wanted to spend more time with his family in England. His exit was clean and left the door open to a possible return that would take a few years to materialize. The character of Humphrey Goodman turned out to be the most profitable of his career to date.
In 2019, he joined the cast of Sanditon to play Tom Parker. This adaptation of Jane Austen's unfinished novel allowed him to explore a different dramatic register. Marshall played a visionary obsessed with turning a small coastal village into a luxury tourist destination.
The show initially faced cancellation issues, but pressure from fans led to three full seasons being filmed. During that time, the actor proved he could handle period dialogue as smoothly as situational comedy. The BBC then decided to bring back his most famous character for a new spin-off project.
In 2023, Beyond Paradise premiered, moving the action from the Caribbean to the coast of Devon. The production avoided tropical landscapes to focus on a more down-to-earth, rural tone. The first season drew eight million viewers in the United Kingdom, deepening interest in Inspector Goodman's world.
In 2024, production company Red Planet Pictures confirmed the show's renewal for a third series following the success of the Christmas special. Filming for the new episodes was scheduled for that autumn in various locations across Cornwall.
