Kriti Sanon arrived in Bombay with a degree in Electronics Engineering under her arm. She had no industry connections or influential family name. In 2014, she starred in Heropanti, and critics dismissed her as just another product of Bollywood's commercial machine. But Sanon decided her film career would not be a simple publicity exercise.
During her first three years in the industry, she piled up big-budget projects that demanded little dramatic depth. In 2015, she took part in Dilwale alongside major names in Indian cinema. The box office numbers worked (more than 50 million dollars worldwide), but her name remained overshadowed by the male leads.
The industry stopped seeing her as a model.
The shift in perception came in 2017 with Bareilly Ki Barfi. Sanon played a woman from a small town who secretly smoked and searched for her own identity. It was the first time audiences connected with her ability to carry a story without relying on impossible choreography or saccharine romance.
In 2019, she shot Luka Chuppi and proved that the mistaken-identity comedy genre suited her well. The film earned ten times its initial budget. Producers then started trusting her with projects where she was the sole driving force of the story. But her real breakthrough came on a film set where she had to gain fifteen kilos.
In 2021, Mimi premiered on a streaming platform. She played a dancer who decides to become a surrogate mother for a foreign couple. The film skipped theaters due to the global situation that year. Despite its digital release, the impact was massive.
In 2023, she received the National Film Award for Best Actress for that performance.
It is the highest recognition an actor can earn in India. This award moved her from the list of supporting actresses to the group of lead actresses who set their own contract terms. In an industry dominated by acting families, Sanon is an anomaly that generates real money.
In 2023, she founded her own production company, Blue Butterfly Films. She did not do it to finance other people's projects. Her aim was to produce her own scripts and avoid waiting on the phone with the major studios. The first project under this label was Do Patti in 2024, where she took on the dual role of actress and executive producer.
It was her first big financial risk.
That same year, she released Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya and The Crew. In the latter, she shared the screen with acclaimed legends of Hindi cinema. The film posted one of the best openings for a movie with three female leads in the history of Indian cinema. Box office figures for its opening weekend topped 10 million dollars.
Sanon has diversified her income with a skincare brand and a fitness app. Her business strategy off camera is as disciplined as her script selection. In 2024, her estimated net worth surpassed $9 million, according to industry tax reports. Filming for her next production in London was scheduled for the last quarter of 2025.
