The Privilege He Turned Down

Lee Yi-kyung made his film debut in White Night in 2012. It wasn't the dream start for a young man from one of South Korea's wealthiest families. His father was the CEO of LG Innotek, but the actor chose to drop out of university and work at a comic book rental shop to pay for acting classes.

In 2012, critics took notice of him for a complex role in an independent film with queer themes. It was a risky bet that moved him away from the more obvious commercial circuits. But that decision cemented his reputation as someone who didn't take the easy road of the TV heartthrob.

He was the son of a top executive who chose the long road.

In the years that followed, he landed one supporting role after another in big-budget productions. He appeared in School 2013 and in the global phenomenon My Love from the Star in 2013. In the latter, he played a cold, calculating secretary who barely blinked in front of the camera.

The industry quickly typecast him in dark or supporting action roles because of his sharp gaze. However, the actor was after something else. He wanted to break free from the image of the serious, wealthy boy that the Korean press constantly tried to project onto him.

The Explosion of the Absurd

In 2018 came the project that changed his career forever. The series Welcome to Waikiki allowed him to explore a physical, almost ridiculous comedic side that nobody expected from him. He played Lee Joon-ki, a failed actor willing to endure any humiliation to land a role.

His gift for improvisation and comic timing put him in a privileged position. He was no longer just the supporting player who simply delivered the script. In 2019, the second season of the series confirmed that his style worked, because he wasn't afraid of total absurdity.

And his bet on comedy paid off.

But his success on television didn't pull him away from film. In 2020 he starred in Hitman: Agent Jun, and in 2022 he led the cast of 6/45. That latter film, about a lottery ticket that crosses the border between the two Koreas, grossed more than $18 million in the domestic market alone.

Switching between genre films and variety shows became his trademark. On shows like I Am Solo or Hangout with Yoo, he showed a direct personality that connected with younger audiences. That natural charm let him stay constantly in the media without wearing down his image as a method actor.

The Return of Hate

In 2024, Lee Yi-kyung took on the challenge of playing one of the most hated characters in recent Korean fiction. In the series Marry My Husband, he brought to life Park Min-hwan, an unfaithful and manipulative husband. The risk was high, because audiences tend to confuse the actor with the character in intense dramas like this one.

He made audiences hate every one of his gestures through a mix of pathos and villainy. The series reached screen ratings above 12 percent during its original broadcast. It was the project that let him show his range went far beyond the exaggerated faces of his years in comedy.

Korean audiences don't easily forget such an expressive face.

Despite his family background, the actor still manages his career with the mindset of a working entertainer. He doesn't turn down small roles if the script has an interesting technical twist. In 2024, his schedule filled up with three scripted projects and two long-term advertising contracts.

The production of Marry My Husband confirmed that the actor shot most of his tense scenes in fewer than three takes. His contract for season 2024 included an exclusivity clause for variety shows during the first half of the year.
