Lisa Faulkner was 16 years old when a talent scout spotted her at a London Underground station. In 1992, she made her film debut in Jean-Jacques Annaud's The Lover. It was a small part, but it caught the attention of the British industry, which saw in this fresh-faced young actress someone who seemed to move in front of the camera effortlessly.
Throughout the 1990s, her face became a familiar sight on British television. In 1995, she played Alison Dangerfield in the series Dangerfield, which opened the doors to long-running productions. Her time on Brookside in 1997 cemented her place in living rooms across Britain.
But British television is a meat grinder for new faces.
In 2002, she landed the role of Helen Flynn in Spooks. It was a brief appearance, lasting only two episodes. The scene of her death in an industrial deep fryer remains one of the most talked-about moments in public television history. That television shock prompted thousands of protest calls to the channel over its visual brutality.
Yet that moment of fictional violence gave her a relevance her earlier roles had failed to achieve. In 2004, she starred in Murder in Suburbia, playing Inspector Ashworth. The series did well for two seasons, but Faulkner was beginning to feel that her career needed a change of direction beyond pure acting.
In 2010, her life took a turn thanks to a cooking competition. She won Celebrity MasterChef and proved she had real talent in the kitchen. It was no whim from a celebrity seeking attention. Her victory in the cooking contest drew three million viewers and changed her professional profile forever.
The apron permanently replaced scripted fiction.
In 2012, she published her first cookbook, Recipes from my Mother for my Daughter. The book sold so well that it established her as an authority in the food industry. Lisa Faulkner turned her image as a supporting actress into a personal brand tied to home cooking.
In 2017, she briefly returned to acting with the role of Fi Browning in EastEnders. It was a fifteen-month storyline that closed her chapter in major daytime drama. But her real priority was already culinary communication and her personal life alongside chef John Torode.
They got married in 2019, and that same year they launched their own cooking show. John & Lisa's Weekend Kitchen began airing on ITV and kept running without interruption. In 2024, the format reached its ninth season, confirming the couple's solid place in the morning TV lineup.
Cooking gave her the stability that acting had denied her.
In 2024, she joined the cast of Waterloo Road to play the role of Hannah Longley. This job marked her return to dramatic acting after several years focused exclusively on writing books and hosting cooking shows. Her scenes were filmed at the Manchester studios, produced by Wall to Wall.
