The Queens Kid Who Never Asked for Permission

James Todd Smith sent a demo tape to the Def Jam offices in 1984 and changed the fate of a record label operating out of a college dorm room. He was sixteen years old. That's when LL Cool J (Ladies Love Cool James) was born, a stage name hiding an ambition that went far beyond rhymes over Roland TR-808 beats.

His move to the screen wasn't a rap star's whim. In 1985 he appeared in Krush Groove, playing himself, but it was in 1991 that the industry realized the kid from Queens had real screen presence. He shared scenes with Michael J. Fox in The Hard Way. He wasn't the typical funny sidekick who just adds color. There was something in his stare that demanded a spot in major studio films.

And the gamble paid off.

In the mid-nineties, he balanced music with sitcoms on In the House. The show ran for five seasons and got American viewers used to seeing his face in their living rooms every week. But action movies kept knocking on his door with scripts that demanded an imposing physique and a tense calm in front of the camera.

Sharks, Stadiums and the Method of Survival

In 1999, the big budgets finally arrived. Renny Harlin was put in the middle of an attack by genetically modified sharks in Deep Blue Sea. The film was a box office hit that grossed $164 million worldwide. The rapper not only survived the plot but also composed the main theme of the soundtrack.

That same year, he worked under Oliver Stone in Any Given Sunday. He played a selfish, ambitious American football player. He had to hold his own acting-wise against Al Pacino and Dennis Quaid on a set heavy with testosterone. Critics stopped seeing him as a singer who made movies and started treating him as a genuine actor with real craft.

Because the secret of his career has always been resilience.

In the early 2000s, he took on projects across very different genres. He appeared in the remake of Rollerball in 2002, and a year later he joined Colin Farrell in S.W.A.T.. These were roles where muscle mattered as much as charisma. He wasn't chasing an Oscar, but he was aiming to be the name producers reached for when they needed box office reliability.

Fourteen Years with the Same Badge

His real step into financial stability came in 2009. He put on the uniform of Special Agent Sam Hanna in NCIS: Los Angeles. What looked like a one-season project became a steady job that lasted fourteen straight years. During that time, the actor stepped away from intense movie shoots to focus on a format that let him sleep at home.

Television is a creature of habit.

In 2023, the series came to an end after 323 episodes were filmed. However, the character didn't die. The actor moved on to NCIS: Hawai'i in 2024 to wrap up loose storylines and keep a television universe alive that has brought him millions in syndication revenue. His image as a tough, protective man became universal thanks to the small screen.

Far from the spotlight of acting, he returned to his musical side with the release of the album The Force in 2024. It was his first studio work in more than a decade and was fully produced by Q-Tip. The album avoided trendy sounds to focus on the raw rap that made him famous in the eighties. In 2021, he received the Musical Excellence Award at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame after six failed nominations.
