Chris O’Donnell flipped burgers in a McDonald’s commercial before turning fifteen. He became the face of the American middle class for a decade. His clean-cut, boy-next-door look opened doors in casting offices looking for the perfect son or the ideal protégé.
Movies didn't take long to call.
In 1990, he made his debut alongside Jessica Lange in Men Don't Leave. But his real breakthrough came when he had to hold his own against a wild Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman. That 1992 performance earned him a Golden Globe nomination and put him straight on Hollywood's most-wanted list.
O’Donnell turned down roles in films that later became classics to focus on big-budget projects. In 1995, he donned Robin's suit in Batman Forever. The movie was a massive box-office hit, but the sequel in 1997 derailed his status as a movie star.
Batman & Robin is remembered as one of the biggest missteps in the history of the genre. The actor later admitted that making it felt more like selling toys than making a movie. He lost the interest of the major studios overnight.
He tried to get back on track with action movies in Vertical Limit during 2000. The film did well at the box office, but it wasn't enough to put him back at the top of the marquee. So he decided to step away from the noise for a while to focus on his family (he has five children with Caroline Fentress).
After a brief stint on Grey's Anatomy in 2006, the actor found his true gold mine. CBS offered him the role of G. Callen in the spin-off of a franchise that dominated global ratings.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2009, NCIS: Los Angeles premiered. What seemed like a temporary job turned into a fourteen-season run. O’Donnell went from the hot young star of the nineties to a trusted face for millions of viewers every week. He signed multimillion-dollar contracts that let him leave the pressure of theatrical releases behind.
Because television gave him the stability that movies denied him after his time with Joel Schumacher. During those years he directed several episodes of the series and was directly involved in the executive production of the franchise.
His run as a special agent ended in 2023 with the series' final cancellation after 323 episodes. By then the actor had already diversified his income beyond the sets. He is a partner in several luxury restaurants in Los Angeles and runs his own production company based in California.
In 2023 he hosted the game show Snake Oil for the Fox network. At this stage of his life, he chooses projects that don't require long trips or grueling shoots abroad. His top priority is still family life at his home in Maine.
The system absorbed him, and he knew how to collect on the debt.
The actor holds a 5% share of residual royalties from international reruns of his television work.
