Lola Flanery was born in Los Angeles in 2005 under a last name already familiar from Hollywood credits. Her father is actor Sean Patrick Flanery. But she decided early on that her career would unfold in Toronto, rather than under the direct shadow of her father in California.
In 2016, she landed her first major role in the horror film Lavender, playing Alice. She was just eleven years old. The experience taught her how a professional shoot works before she made the leap to big-budget television.
It was the start of a string of castings that placed her at the center of the fantasy genre.
In 2017, the Canadian industry cast her in the series The Mist. That adaptation of Stephen King's work didn't make it past its first season due to low ratings. But Flanery's work caught the attention of the producers of Shadowhunters, who were looking for someone to bring the Seelie Queen to life.
The character required a coldness unusual for a girl, and she delivered a maturity that surprised fans of the original novels. She managed to take part in seven key episodes of the series before making a permanent change of direction.
That same year came the project that would define her teenage years in front of the cameras.
She joined the cast of The 100 during its fourth season to play Madi Griffin. What began as a supporting role became the emotional core of the series for more than fifty episodes. The mother-daughter relationship she built with the lead character drove the storylines until the end of production in 2020.
Working on a series for The CW means enduring grueling shooting schedules and massive media exposure. Her salary per episode increased steadily, while the adult cast watched a minor steal the spotlight at fan conventions.
During breaks from filming in Vancouver, she took on other projects. In 2018, she joined the medical drama Mary Kills People, playing Vivien. For months, she balanced landscapes ravaged by nuclear radiation with hospital hallways in far more realistic productions.
It hasn't been a smooth upward climb without setbacks.
Her mother runs an artisan bakery in Toronto called Eat My Words. Lola grew up surrounded by scripts and the smell of sourdough. That duality helped her stay grounded during the years of her greatest success on American television. In 2023, she stayed active on social media with a very direct, unfiltered approach to her fans.
She passed one million followers on Instagram without hiring an outside PR agency to manage her public image. However, after leaving the big young-adult franchises behind, she decided to be much more selective about her on-screen appearances.
In 2024, her name came up again for several independent productions in Canada looking for professionals with long-running television experience. Filming for her latest appearance lasted just fourteen days at a location near Ontario. The total budget for that production didn't come close to the cost of a single episode from her earlier work.
