Manny Montana never set out to chase the Hollywood spotlight. His real obsession was American football, and in his youth he earned a scholarship to play at California State University. A serious arm injury ended his sports dreams before he turned twenty.
He had to reinvent his life. He enrolled in Journalism and Broadcasting while working at the campus radio station. That experience cured his fear of the microphone, but it was an elective theater class that changed his life forever.
He started with small roles in national TV series, where he had just a line or two. In 2008 he appeared in an episode of ER, and shortly after he guest-starred in the legal drama Raising the Bar. These weren't exactly blockbuster gigs.
He was a supporting actor looking for a crack in the system.
In 2013 USA Network premiered Graceland. Montana played Johnny Tuturro, an FBI agent who brought a necessary light to a rather dark drug-trafficking plot. The role was designed to be purely functional, but his performance made him indispensable over the show's three seasons.
Then came the project that changed everything.
In 2018 he joined the cast of Good Girls to bring to life a criminal named Rio. In the NBC original script, this character barely carried any narrative weight. The producers saw that the chemistry with the lead was too obvious to ignore and decided to give him more screen time in every episode.
Because Rio wasn't your typical criminal by the book. Montana brought a tense calm and a slow, deliberate way of speaking that hooked Netflix audiences worldwide. The series was canceled in 2021 after four seasons due to financial problems and scheduling conflicts among the main cast.
The shadow of that character still follows him to every audition.
He kept working nonstop to avoid being typecast. In 2022 he joined Power Book IV: Force as Cortez. It was a logical step to maintain his tough-guy image in big-budget productions while still pursuing independent film projects.
But his real leap to the big leagues came with his entry into superhero movies. In 2024 his participation in Ironheart was confirmed, one of Disney's big bets for the 2025 slate. In this Marvel production he plays a character whose details have barely been revealed.
His contract requires him to keep absolutely quiet about the show's plot.
For this shoot he had to relocate to Atlanta for several months of intense work. Production faced several logistical delays due to union strikes in the industry, but it wrapped principal photography with an estimated budget of **$200 million**.
