Martha Plimpton didn't need a stage name because her own already came with pedigree. Daughter of Keith Carradine and Shelley Plimpton, she was born in 1970 surrounded by scripts and dressing rooms in New York. By eight she was already modeling for Calvin Klein, and at eleven she made her film debut in Rollover in 1981.
The industry never quite knew where to place her.
She didn't have the porcelain teen-star look that studios wanted in the eighties. But she had a raspy voice and a gaze that conveyed an intelligence that made casting directors uneasy. In 1985, Richard Donner chose her to play Stef in The Goonies, and her face ended up in casting files around the world.
In 1986 she shot The Mosquito Coast, and there she met River Phoenix. They started a relationship that lasted several years and linked her to a generation of actors who hated the artifice of Los Angeles. They worked together again in 1988 on Running on Empty, directed by Sidney Lumet.
That film earned her praise for her ability to carry the drama without resorting to sentimental tricks. But she preferred to steer clear of big productions. During the 1990s she focused on titles such as I Shot Andy Warhol in 1996 or Pecker in 1998, directed by John Waters.
And the gamble paid off.
Because Plimpton understood early on that prestige doesn't always live at the box office. Between 2007 and 2009, she earned three consecutive Tony Award nominations on Broadway. She took part in complex plays such as The Coast of Utopia or Top Girls, proving that her natural habitat was the live stage.
In 2010 her profile changed with mainstream audiences thanks to comedy. She played Virginia Chance in the series Raising Hope for four seasons. It was a role that let her explore physical comedy and the tenderness of a young grandmother in a working-class family.
In 2012 she won a Primetime Emmy Award for her role as attorney Patti Nyholm in The Good Wife. It was a recurring role, but so sharp that she stole every scene she appeared in. Producers appreciated her quick wit and her lack of vanity in front of the camera.
But theater remained her personal priority.
In 2021, she starred in Mass, a low-budget film shot almost entirely in one room. The plot centers on a meeting between two couples after a school tragedy. Her performance as a mother broken by grief received reviews that praised her capacity for absolute restraint.
In 2024 she joined the cast of The Regime, a political satire produced by HBO. She played a U.S. senator in a production with a budget of tens of millions of dollars. Filming of her scenes took place at locations in the Vienna Botanical Garden.
