Maxwell Jenkins was born in Chicago in 2005 into a family that could not imagine life without showbiz. His parents founded the Midnight Circus, and there he learned to play the mandolin and perform acrobatics before he knew what a film script was. That physical training gave him a competitive edge that few child actors have in today's industry.
In 2013, he landed his first major role in the series Betrayal. It was not a massive ratings hit, but it got casting directors to notice a profile that did not fit the cliché of the annoying cereal commercial kid. Jenkins projected an unusual maturity for his age.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2015, he worked under the Wachowski sisters on Sense8. He played the young version of Will Gorski, and although his appearances were brief, the intensity of the production taught him how high-budget shoots worked. It was his first real encounter with author-driven science fiction.
In 2018, Lost in Space began, where he played Will Robinson for three seasons. The shoot stretched until 2021 and forced the actor to literally grow up in front of viewers around the world. His chemistry with the show's robot was the emotional engine of a production that cost millions of dollars per episode.
Outer space was his high school.
During his years shooting in Vancouver, he had to juggle classes with exhausting workdays in green-screen settings. In 2020, he appeared in the film Joe Bell alongside Mark Wahlberg, where he showed he could carry adult dramas without relying on special effects. Critics praised his ability to convey vulnerability without slipping into cheap sentimentality.
Playing a literary icon of hard-boiled fiction comes with real technical risks. In 2022, he took on the challenge of playing young Jack Reacher in the Amazon Prime Video series Reacher. He had to build muscle mass to be believable as the teenage version of a towering man. The series racked up 1.8 billion minutes viewed in its first week of release, according to Nielsen data.
In 2024, Arcadian hit theaters, a post-apocalyptic horror film in which he shares the screen with Nicolas Cage. The shoot took place in Ireland under harsh weather conditions that demanded total physical commitment. Jenkins plays a teenager who must learn to hunt and defend himself in a world where night means certain death.
There was no turning back.
In the action scenes of his most recent projects, he skips stunt doubles whenever the production insurance allows it. That Chicago circus upbringing still shapes how he works on set. He is not looking for the comfort of the trailer but for the realism of real physical effort in front of the camera.
In 2024, he balances his acting career with his band Cowboy Jesus and the Sugar Bums. The group rehearses in Chicago when production schedules in Toronto or Dublin give him a technical breather. His contract for the next seasons of Reacher includes specific clauses on the combat training needed to keep his look consistent with the rest of the cast.
