Mena Massoud was born in Cairo in 1991 and grew up in the conservative environment of a Coptic family in Ontario. Before stepping onto a film set, he studied neuroscience at the University of Toronto because his parents hoped he would have a stable future. But the pull of the lab couldn't compete with his true calling.
In 2011, he decided to give it all up and enrolled in the theater school at Ryerson University. It was a risky decision that led him to land supporting roles in series such as Nikita and Open Heart during his first years in the Canadian industry.
The gamble paid off.
Guy Ritchie cast him in 2017 to star in the live-action version of Aladdin after a months-long casting process that drew two thousand hopefuls. Disney's production hit theaters in 2019 and passed the one billion dollars mark at the global box office. Massoud went from unknown to having his face on billboards around the world in a matter of weeks.
But the phone stopped ringing.
In December 2019, the actor revealed in an interview that he had not received a single audition offer since the release of his big hit. Hollywood immediately typecast him, and his ethnic profile seemed to limit his options rather than expand them. It was a reality check that called into question the meritocracy of the American studio system.
Massoud did not wait around for his agent to bring him good news. In 2019 he founded his own production company, Press Play Productions, with the goal of giving a voice to artists from diverse communities. He knew that if he wanted complex characters, he would have to finance his own projects from the ground up.
The market is merciless.
During 2020, he appeared in the series Reprisal for Hulu and lent his voice to animated projects. During those uncertain months of the global pandemic, he also released his cookbook Evolving Vegan. He turned his lifestyle into a brand to diversify his income while commercial cinema turned its back on him.
In 2022, he got his commercial momentum back with the Netflix film The Royal Treatment. This romantic comedy became one of the most-watched titles on the platform during its first weeks. It wasn't the independent art-house cinema he was looking for, but it helped him regain visibility with international casting directors.
Massoud decided to look to his roots to find characters with more dramatic weight. In 2023 he shot the film In Broad Daylight in Egypt, playing a con artist who returns to his home country. It was his first major lead role spoken in Arabic and a statement of intent about his creative independence outside Los Angeles.
In 2023 he also explored horror with The Sacrifice Game, directed by Jenn Wexler. In this production he moved away entirely from the family hero image Disney had imposed on him years earlier. The shoot took place in Quebec and the film premiered at the Fantasia Festival.
Filming for the second season of his food travel show wrapped up in late 2024.
