In 1999, Nicholas Hytner was looking for a professional dancer who wouldn't be intimidated by a film camera to star in Center Stage. Amanda Schull was then an apprentice with the San Francisco Ballet with no prior acting experience. She landed the lead role of Jody Sawyer because her footwork was flawless and her gaze conveyed a vulnerability the director didn't find in method actresses.
The movie grossed 26 million dollars in 2000.
It was the beginning of a slow transition.
Schull didn't leave dance right away after her debut. She remained part of the San Francisco Ballet corps de ballet until 2006. Those days of extreme physical discipline and ten-hour rehearsals shaped how she approached later shoots. For her, a television set requires the same mechanical precision as an opera stage.
In 2008, she decided to move to Los Angeles to try to make a living from acting alone. She started with one-off characters in procedural series such as Cold Case and Ghost Whisperer. But real stability in the industry came with the role of Meredith Sorenson in Pretty Little Liars starting in 2010.
And the change of direction was total.
In 2013, she joined the cast of Suits. Her character, Katrina Bennett, started out as a minor antagonist and ended up becoming a key piece in the show's final seasons. Schull brought a cool, technical precision that fit perfectly with the legal tone of the script, and her chemistry with co-star Rick Hoffman helped extend her contract beyond what was originally planned.
At the same time, she shot the science fiction series 12 Monkeys between 2015 and 2018. There, she played Dr. Cassandra Railly for 47 episodes. It was her first major physical challenge outside of dance, since shooting in Toronto demanded night shoots and exhausting emotional continuity due to the time-travel storylines.
Technique always comes before ego.
Schull has maintained a steady career without needing big headlines in the tabloid press. In 2022, she appeared in the Netflix series The Recruit, playing a CIA agent named Cora. She has also found a profitable niche in Hallmark productions, where she typically shoots one or two movies a year.
In 2023, she appeared in the series 9-1-1: Lone Star, playing Rose Casey in a multi-episode arc. Her on-screen work tends to be direct and free of unnecessary flourishes. She isn't after personal showmanship; instead, she lets the scene move forward with the same clean precision she brought to her ballet turns.
Schull lives in California with her family and their son, born in February 2020. Her longest contract in the industry is still for Suits, with a total of 49 credited episodes.
