In the mid-1970s, Argentina's civic-military dictatorship abruptly shut down the sociology program at the University of Buenos Aires. Mercedes Morán was barely twenty years old, had a baby daughter in her arms, and had no interest whatsoever in show business. To pass the time and fend off discouragement, she enrolled in acting classes taught by actor Lito Cruz.

The university plan was over.

That pragmatic decision irreversibly changed her destiny. Morán stepped onto the Buenos Aires theater circuit with productions of Arthur Miller and David Mamet, gaining weight on stage while television began competing for her presence. But mass fame came late, without commercial rush. In 1998 she agreed to star in the sitcom Gasoleros, where the small screen reached peaks of more than thirty rating points during Argentina's prime time.

And the whole country learned her name.

That domestic popularity gave her financial independence but did not typecast her as the easygoing charm of soap operas. While half of Argentina watched her have dinner in the nine o'clock fiction slot, she sought out projects where ugliness and disillusionment had a place.

The Salta Mud and the Dry Gaze

In 2001, Lucrecia Martel cast Morán in The Swamp. Martel demanded that she shed the habits of television acting to capture the suffocating lethargy of a decaying provincial bourgeoisie. Morán took on the role of Tali without a trace of makeup or star vanity. That clash with auteur cinema launched a decisive creative partnership.

In 2004, she reunited with Martel for The Holy Girl, which screened in the official selection at the Cannes Film Festival. The actress learned to work with uncomfortable silences and a sidelong gaze. As a result, the most demanding auteur directors on the continent began calling on her to carry complex stories.

In 2004, Walter Salles cast her as Ernesto Guevara's mother in The Motorcycle Diaries. That same year, she co-starred alongside Ricardo Darín in the dramatic comedy Luna de Avellaneda, directed by Juan José Campanella. Morán handled every scene with a stunning economy of gesture.

In 2016 Chilean director Pablo Larraín gave her the role of Delia del Carril in Neruda. Under Larraín's camera she played a communist aristocrat with a magnetic coldness that earned her unanimous praise in the European circuit. Two years later, in 2018, she presented three different feature films at the same time: El Ángel by Luis Ortega, Familia sumergida by María Alché, and Sueño Florianópolis by Ana Katz.

For this latter work, she won the Crystal Globe for Best Actress at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival after a unanimous vote by the international jury.

Her Own Scripts and Bodies Pushed to the Limit

Past the age of sixty, Morán decided to write her own material. In 2016, she premiered the stage monologue Ay, amor divino!, directed by Claudio Tolcachir, an autobiographical piece that played to packed houses for months in Buenos Aires and Madrid. In 2023, she made the leap into screenwriting with the script for the feature film Norma, co-written with director Santiago Giralt, in which she also took the lead role.

Nobody expected such dryness.

That same year, she premiered on digital platforms the adaptation of the novel Elena Knows, directed by Anahí Berneri. In the film, she played a woman devastated by advanced Parkinson's who insists on solving her daughter's murder while her body grows paralyzed. Morán has always preferred physical roughness to the tearjerking sentimentality of traditional melodramas.

During the shoot of Elena Knows, filmed over six winter weeks in the province of Buenos Aires, Morán spent four hours a day with an occupational therapist to replicate the motor blocks and joint stiffness of the disease. The film was delivered for final editing at exactly one hundred minutes long.
