Milla Jovovich arrived in London at age five, fleeing the Soviet Union. Her mother was a prestigious Russian actress and her father a Serbian doctor. That forced cultural transplant shaped a gaze that Richard Avedon captured when she was only eleven years old.
The fashion industry quickly devoured her. By 1987, she was already on international magazine covers, and her work sparked ethical debates about the sexualization of minors in advertising. But Jovovich's real goal was on film sets in California.
She made her film debut in Two Moon Junction in 1988. It was a small role that helped pay the bills while she tried to figure out how Hollywood worked.
Money came before vocation.
In 1991, she starred in Return to the Blue Lagoon. The film was a critical disaster, but it gave her the visibility she needed to take on more interesting projects. She then decided to step away from the cameras for a while to focus on music and released a folk album inspired by Ukrainian traditions.
Luc Besson was chosen from thousands of hopefuls to play Leeloo in The Fifth Element in 1997. She had to learn an invented language of 400 words and train in martial arts for months. Her orange hair and white bandage suit pulled her away from modeling and into genre films.
She married Besson during the filming of The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc in 1999. The production was a logistical nightmare, and its box office reception was icy. Her personal relationship with the French director ended shortly after the film's release.
Many people thought her career would end there.
But in 2002, she accepted a script based on a Japanese video game from Capcom. The project was titled Resident Evil and had a budget of just 33 million dollars. Nobody at Sony expected the film to launch one of the most profitable action franchises of contemporary cinema.
For fifteen years, Jovovich played Alice in six different films. She became the public face of a franchise that grossed more than 1,200 million dollars worldwide. During this period, she met her current husband, director Paul W.S. Anderson.
Her work specialized in physical action cinema. She shot Ultraviolet in 2006 and A Perfect Getaway in 2009, where she tried to move away from digital effects to show a drier, more grounded style. It did not always win favor with the specialized press.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2020, she reunited with Anderson on Monster Hunter. The production was delayed by the global health crisis and ended up earning 44 million dollars, a figure considered insufficient by the studio's standards. Even so, her name still guaranteed sales in the domestic market and on streaming platforms.
In 2024, she premiered Breathe, a survival thriller set in a world without oxygen. For 2025, the release of In the Lost Lands, an adaptation of George R.R. Martin's novella, is scheduled. She also finished filming Midnight under the direction of Joshua Guteman.
The actress currently earns around 5 million dollars per action movie.
