In 1986, the fashion world was turned upside down when a girl from Ontario won the Supermodel of the World competition. Monika Schnarre was only fourteen years old. That million-dollar contract with the Ford agency broke every industry rule regarding her age and a height that nearly reached six foot three.
Her arrival on the covers of Vogue was an absolute anomaly. The industry wasn't used to a teenager occupying the space reserved for adult women. But her look was commanding, and it forced major fashion houses to look toward Canada. Before turning fifteen, she was already an international figure earning astronomical sums.
It was a violent entry into the adult market.
In 1990, she decided modeling would not be her only stop. So she began studying acting to keep the pretty-face character from swallowing the woman. It was no easy road, since casting directors in Los Angeles tended to look warily at girls coming off the Milan runways.
In 1994, she settled in California with the intention of working seriously. Her first major role came on the soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful (known in Spain as Belleza y poder), where she played Ivonne. That experience taught her the frenetic pace of daily shoots and the discipline American television demands.
And the gamble paid off.
In the late nineties, her career shifted toward fantasy and action genres. In 1999, she joined the series Beastmaster as the Sorceress. It was a period of physical shoots and long makeup sessions. Still, she preferred the effort of the set to the emptiness of the commercial photo shoots that were starting to bore her.
In 2001, she appeared in the film Snowbound and also had guest roles in popular series such as Andromeda and The King of Queens. She was always working. But she never chased the mass stardom that big Hollywood productions offer (a world she always found too toxic for someone who started so young).
She never wanted to be just a face on a billboard.
In 2007, she decided that the Los Angeles lifestyle no longer fit her personal priorities. She returned to her native Canada to explore her side as a businesswoman. She launched her own line of sunglasses and later focused on the natural cosmetics and skincare sector. In 2014, she founded her own brand aimed at women looking for products free of harsh chemicals.
In 2020, she specialized in the luxury real estate market in the Muskoka area. It is a wooded, exclusive setting where she manages high-end properties far from the media noise of her younger years. Still, she hasn't left the media behind entirely. In 2024, she regularly appears on Canadian television programs as a lifestyle and wellness expert.
Her official profile at modeling agencies in the 1980s always listed her height as 1.88 meters without shoes.
