Nam Joo-hyuk stands almost six feet tall, and that nearly derailed his career before it started. As a teenager, his obsession wasn't the spotlight but basketball, until a shin injury pulled him off the court while he was still in high school. That physical setback pushed him toward modeling almost by default, since his height let him move confidently on the runways of Seoul.
And that's how he ended up at a fashion show.
In 2014, he made his television debut with a supporting role in The Idle Mermaid. At the time, Korean critics saw him as just another model trying to use his looks to break into drama. It didn't help that his early characters played up the perfect, athletic boy-next-door image he already had.
In 2015, he starred in Who Are You: School 2015, and the buzz around him started to shift. But his gaze still lacked weight.
The real transformation came in 2019 with The Light in Your Eyes. In this series, Nam Joo-hyuk stopped being the youthful leading man and played a man broken by sadness and despair. It was the first time the industry stopped talking about his broad shoulders and instead analyzed his dramatic range alongside acting legends like Kim Hye-ja.
The gamble paid off.
That shoot took away his fear of silence. In 2020, he starred in Josee alongside Han Ji-min and confirmed that he preferred restrained characters to big theatrics. That same year, he filmed Start-Up for Netflix, playing a socially awkward tech genius who connected with a massive global audience.
In 2022, he starred in Twenty-Five Twenty-One. His portrayal of Baek Yi-jin earned him a privileged place in the industry because he captured the melancholy of a financial crisis without losing his charisma. The series reached ratings above 11% in South Korea and kept him at the top of popularity charts for weeks.
In March 2023, Nam Joo-hyuk took the mandatory break that every Korean actor dreads and enlisted in the military police. Before leaving, he recorded Vigilante for Disney+ (2023), playing a police academy student who takes justice into his own hands at night. It was a physically demanding, dark role that definitively moved him away from the high school boy image.
He completed his military service in September 2024.
On his return, the industry had projects with greater narrative depth waiting for him. In 2025, his name was linked to the period production Donggung, where he explored dark fantasy. The actor then decided that his next steps would be defined by stories where internal conflict mattered more than the look of the shot.
His representation contract with the agency Management SOOP was renewed with the goal of prioritizing film over television. In 2026, the actor settled in Seoul while preparing a supporting role in a low-budget independent production. Nam Joo-hyuk currently earns about 50,000 dollars per episode on national television.
